popups in explorer

hi all,

i am brand new over here and this is my first post.. the reason i came here is because everything that i could do has not solved my problem... here is my problem;

1. my internet explorer gets a popup every now and then linking to **** sites or game sites... but mostly **** sites.... i have tried almost all freeware spyware removal softwares and one shareware as well (spybot, adware, xoft spy) but they are still here.

2. now the thing that i noticed once was when the popup opened the address on the title window showed as either office-update or security-update and then it hit me that i haven't received automatic updates from microsoft for a while.. and sure enough when i went to the windows update site it showed me a few security updates. i downloaded those but they are not being installed (it says failed install). MS knowledge base is silent on this issue.

3. i am using win2k service pack 4, IE 6, symantec antivirus corp edition 2001 and zonealarm.
