I have been annoyed recently by pop-ups that appear when ie is closed. I downloaded a stopzilla trial and it doesn't stop these pop-ups. I recently began downloading info into Quicken and wondered if Quicken could be sending pop-ups? Although they are not "quicken" pop-ups, but rather an insurance company.
Does anyone have any idea how I can stop these? Since they aren't connected to having my browser open I can't understand it. I have been searching my program files for programs that might have gotten downloaded but can't seem to identify any.
Anyone have any help for me?

    Thanks

Sounds very odd, but run Spybot and AdAware if you havn't done so already - ALWAYS run Spybot FIRST - and delete all they find.

I agree do the spybot thing. There is a neat little program, takes up viturally no memory. It's call http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds/. For a peice of freeware it certainly has paid for itself!

I will do that. In the meantime, I went to Temp Internet Files and did a search for "pop-up" and for "ad" and deleted everything that came up. So far my screen has been ok. I will download those programs. Thanks so much. This bb is the greatest thing.

I downloaded the programs and I was amazed at how much they found. Is there anything that could happen to my regular sites that I should know about? In case something is eliminated that I need? So far everything has worked perfectly. Thanks again.

Spybot and AdAware search for spyware on your PC - little applets that Internet sites can put on your system to spy on your browsing habits and to send it back 'home'. In Spybot you can check what a particular piece of spyware does - some common apps are considered spyware because they 'phone home' . I believe the Google toolbar is one so you make up your own mind as to whether to keep or not.

Your regular sites should work fine, but beware that they can/may download spyware and it is a good idea to run these two apps, say, monthly - or at the first signs of any strange going ons.

BTW if you haven't got a firewall - get one ASAP - Kerio Personal Firewall comes highly recommended by many on the board - freeware for home use.

An as far as NoAds is concerned. You can just let that app fire up everytime you start windows. And if a new popup window comes up that you don't want open NoAds and add to it.

I like this one because it won't kill ever single popup just incase there's one on a site that you need to see. Since you didn't single it out you can see it.

I haven't used a firewall because I used to use zone alarm or alert or whatever it is, but my internet backup program wouldn't work with it. Should I try this new program? I would feel much better with a firewall.

Hey - we must stop meeting like this :D

Firewalls are an absolute must these days. Generally they are easy to configure to allow/disallow.

Try Kerio - very easy to set up - installs in 'learning mode' and asks for allow/disallow. In the boxes which pop up initially carefully read who/what wanfs to do what and allow or deny. I wouldn't see a problem with an internet backup program. Anyway you can always disable the firewall temporarily if you must.

    Firewalls

    Hi Wiry,

PeteC is absolutley correct in saying a firewall is neccesary and has recommended a very fine fire wall Kerio Personall FireWall (my firewall of choice)

ZoneAlarm is a Permit or Deny based firewall... kinda set it and forget it... on the other hand Sygate and Kerio (to name a few)
are rule based and get more involved as to what rules you want to set for permiting and denying. Letting you customize your rules
to your needs. I have a FAQ here for you about Kerio. Hope it helps

    Wiry,

What you experienced is a 'pop-under" as opposed to "pop-up ".

Here is a site that explains how popups and popunders are accomplished and tests various brands of pop(s) blockers and Browsers for their effectivness at blocking them http://www.popup-killer-review.com/test.htm

    re-pop up's

are you sure they are not msn pop-up's? as they come and go whenever they like.
to stop them do the following...
my computer, control panel, admin tools, services icon, then a new small box will open, scroll down to messenger and double click on it, and select 'start up type' and select disable.
this will stop messenger messages from coming back..
    hope this helps you..

    billy.

    Hello harvestmoonuk,

MSN? I don't think so, not with IE closed. It can be XP's messenger if Wiry is on an always open connection.

To shut down messenger service: start > run > type in Services.msc

Scroll down to Messenger, double click and in the startup type drop down menu of the properties panel click on either manual or disabled.

Another way, always more than one, start > type msconfig > services tab > scroll down to messenger and uncheck the box next to it.

    Regards - Charles

I thank you all for your help. I have been through quite an experience. I was so annoyed by the pop-unders (somehow they are much more annoying than the pop-ups while browsing because they appear out of nowhere when the browser is closed)
that I first did the security fixes from microsoft for win98 and outlook express ... and after that, internet explorer doesn't work well at all. Very very slow. So I tried the repair. Still very very slow. So I went back to an earlier version of ie. Still slow. So I reinstalled ie6. Still slow. So forget it, I'll use aol which used to be slower but now is like lightning by comparison. (I did these upgrades on four different computers, 2 were also win98 and one was win2k and everything is fine on all of those. But I had been having loading problems on the version of win98 that I had the problems with so there were probably problems to begin with.

Anyway, after the upgrade, I still got pop-unders. And pop-ups.
So I cleaning out all my cookies, installed spybot and adaware (what fascinating programs) installed kerio firewall. And still got the pop-unders. (none of the other computers had pop-unders).
So I loaded spyware blaster. Still got pop-unders.

So I downloaded Stop-zilla ... still got pus. Uninstalled that and installed pop-up killer which was recommended on this board. Still got pus. So I uninstalled that and went looking for one that specifically mentioned that it worked with aol since I was beginning to suspect that maybe the other pop-up killers were ie killers. So I downloaded Pop-up Stopper Professional and finally they have stopped.

I now get so many massages about what is trying to attack me that it boggles my mind. I clean the cookies and before I know it, theyyyyyy're back. I'm becoming obsessed. Who are all these people and what do they want from me?

Anyway, one computer out of four isn't bad ... it's my personal laptop ... the one I'm on the internet most with. I just don't feel like fdisking even tho I know I probably should. I might just load another browser like netscape just to have a fast browser. I don't know. But you all have been great. I became a member I felt so guilty about all the time I took up.

    Thanks again.

I don't think that "messenger" exists in Win98. At least I couldn't find "admin tools" in my control panel ... nor could I find "services "
tab in my msconfig. I am assuming that you are talking about Win XP

    Hello harvestmoonuk,

You are right, the way to stop the MSN chat client is as you describe.

I'm writing about XP's Messenger Service. Blame MS for labeling their products the way they do.

    Wiry,

Yes, I meant XP's messenger service. Sorry if you mentioned your OS and I didn't keep that in mind.

    Regards - Charles

Would Kerio be as good or better than Zone Alarm?
