    Hi,
I have tried invain to stop and get around a pop-up on a friends computer who has Windows Xp (Home Edition) that says his computer is infected with spyware and needs to download and run the scanner...I have worked on computers who have allowed this only to find either spyaxe or spyware striker in their computers afterwards...Luckily this was never allowed to download anything "yet "...It pop-up as soon as access to MSN is started and will not allow access to the Internet...I have managed to get around it but everything I have downloaded it stops it from connecting to it's database for updates and all scans come up with zero findings prior to last night...While downloading SpySweeper last night, one of the other tools at our disposal known as Ewido, downloaded it's updates (which was prevented from doing so before)and when ran it found nothing...SpySweeper found over 500 traces but would not quarantine them unless it was subscribed too...I have looked high and low in the registry and Hosts file and many other known areas finding nothing that would lead to me to a suspicious file and / or program for it's association...According to information I have obtained, this particular pop-up that has a roach appearing on screen with it, does not match those of Smitfraud and those associated with it...Any assitance will be as usual greatly appreciated...Thank You

Post a HijackThis log file ....

Download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature, save it to a folder on the hard drive, not to the desktop or a temporary location, run it and post the log here.

    Hi,
Okay I will this evening...I would like to add that this particular computer has two hard drives and uses Norton System works...In my prior post I am not so sure if I was clear enough when I mentioned Ewido updated while downloading SpySweeper ? No matter what I tried downloading, nothing would connect to it's database, so when it came to SpySweeper, instead of saving it to the desktop, I choose to Run it since saving the priors did not work and as it was detecting adware, etc that is when Ewido piped up...I am not ceertain if Spyware has not already infected the computer and if this pop-up is not a MSN feature since I am unable to confirm it from other sources as I have done with Smitfraud...

My inexperienced eye in scanning HJT logs fails to pick up anything amiss in the log - it looks clean to me.

I have edited your thread title to indicate an HJT log, but beyond that I can't contribute anything further - sorry :(

    Hi,
Thanks just the same...I have studied how to read a log and even thou I am not certified, I did not notice anything suspicious either...What's even more puzzling is, when I or the owner signs onto MSN we get this pop up and can not get beyond it...I set the computer so the Internet Explorer is the default browser and when I use that to access the Internet we can get on the Internet...But no matter what I download the database for such can not be accessed (except when we choose to run it instead of saving it like we did SpySweeper)...Because this pop up is claiming the computer has spyware and it has not been allowed to download per it's instructions, finding what it may be associated with is not possible making it's removal difficult...So we are battling a way to stop it before it downloads and can't...

    Hi,
Just wanted to post more info:

I ran the Microsoft Malicious remover and it found nothing...I then re-checked once again the Hosts file and it's normal...Followed that up with checking the security (via Internet Options), both the trusted and Intranet where some known stuff can load itself and it's clean...I believe I have checked all known area's and ran most spyware scans and I have yet to stop this pop-up from loading when MSN is accessed...

I should Google for MSN Groups - odds are that somebody else has experienced the same trouble.

    Hi,
When I tried searching the problem on Google, I read something to that effect but for some reason I did not get the drift...Thanks

I also added another pop-up blocker (by Mathies) to go along with the one added by the SP2 and that did not make a difference...
