i'm helping someone o'er the phone. Attending to that person, in person myself is quite a mission impossible thing for now.

    well, the situation:

    OS is Windows XP.
the pop up window actually is an adobe acrobat document.
That person has adobe acrobat reader 5 and 7 installed.

the pop up blocker that comes with Internet explorer has been disabled.

i've done troubleshooting on the possible causes, like uninstalling suspected pop up blockers in the system, allowing pop ups when it comes to that particular site that contains that pop up as mentioned in the title above.

i've also told that person to uninstall adobe acrobat reader 5 and 7 and reinstall only the adobe acrobat reader 7, which is then followed by a restart.
I've yet, but am soon to receive reply whether this latest step here has solved the problem.

meanwhile, any idea on what to troubleshoot further?

First, launch acrobat reader and check edit/ preferences/ updates
Check do not automatically check for updates. This one tends to cause more problems than it solves. It is better to just manually check occaisionally.
Internet , check all three boxes

My suspicion is it is opening the update check window and closing it when no update is found. It could be worse, often it just hangs there and locks everything up.

ninelives1980 - I don't often suggest replacing an app with another before even trying to see if a fix works (and the suggested one very possibly will) but this is an exception.

I am a heavy .pdf file user and I have replaced Adobe Reader on all the PCs I work with. Now using a free reader from Foxit. Much smaller app and lots faster responding. To give an idea, the download is under 1Mb compared to the 27+Mb for the Adobe Reader these days. I also use the not-free Foxit Editor for creating & editing .pdf files.

I'd strongly recommend that anyone dealing with .pdf files at least give the Foxit Reader a try.

Newt, I just read this thread and had to try your recommendation for Foxit
Uninstalled Reader 6 on my other older 98 machine
    Installed Foxit
The program opens a lot quicker compared to the more bloated Adobe
Now, when the wife comes home and it passes inspection
I think I'll keep it and install it on my XP machine too
    Thanks for the link :)

indmusic - that's about the same reaction I had when I first tried the app. It's even nicer on XP.

I assume you can use the right click choose program and 'choose' Foxit without uninstalling Acrobat reader, just to try it out?

Yup. Sure can. Probably easier to right-click and pick Foxit as the default for .pdf files while you are trying it. Takes only a few seconds to change back to Acrobat if you decide on that.

I have Adobe Acrobat 6 (full version) and occasionally I have to hold down the control key when opening a pdf on the web, even with pop up blockers shut off. I think it depends on how the website is coded- if the pdf needs to open in a new window or not, but I haven't experimented with it enough to be sure. I suspect it has to do with the window because I can usually right click and "open in new window" and that works, too.  I'll probably be up all night uploading pdfs, trying to come up with a more definitive answer. Thanks a lot, folks! :D :D
