I am trying to install an external usb cd/rw drive but but xp/sp3 never even knows its there. I get NO messages about the new device and nod drive id is assigned. Any ideas of what to do with it.

Have you tried another USB device in the same USB Port to confirm it works and is recognized?
Have you run Add Hardware Wizard? Neil.;)

first when you plug it in - do you hear the ping sound - that means the system "sees it "
if not - try another usb port
some of the time the driver is installed incorrectly and names it something else
    Uninstall the device
    Unplug
    Reboot
    Once up - try again

Most systems should recognise USB DVD on boot.

Plug in the drive & then boot. Keep an eye on the configuration screen, the computer should be able to detect the drive. If it doesn't, try the drive in some other computer. It could be faulty.

the port that I first plugged it in to didn't supply enough power so I took a split cable and plugged it into two ports and it worked fine. Thanks for the replys. DPI.
