    Im very sorry if this has been posted before! I ran a search but couldnt find anything.

    I just bought a new machine for web surfing with a K7SEM V1.0 and a Athlon XP 1700, an old 6.0GB HD, 256MB SDRAM, onboard video (set to use 64MB), everything else onboard. The BIOS is at version 1.1e, I think this is the newest version... the chip should run at about 1.47 GHz right? On the boot screen it says Athlon XP 1.1! It does the same thing in the My Computer Properties Window in Windows XP Pro. I dont even mind if its running at 1.1, but it keeps locking up every few minutes! its not even useable, in my experience this problem is caused by an overheating CPU, but its running at 40ºC, so it should be fine, on another website someone posted that i HAD to replace the motherboard, but this really isnt an option for me can someone please help! THANX alot in advance.

    guru2020,

    Is it possible that your FSB speed is set to 100 instead of 133?

    I think the clock mutlipier for the XP 1700 is 11.

    11X100 = 1100 1.1GHz

    11X133 = 1463 1.46 GHz

    Just a thought,

    Gary

    Hi guru2020

    I'm not a hardware guru, but I did have a very simular problem on my new XP. Unless you make the FSB setting via the BIOS, we shared the same problem. If not, my BIOS had the incorrect speed setting. The real culprit was a weak battery.

    Hi guru2020

    I'm glad everthing worked out. I've been messing with computers since the late 80's. I have two rules... find and participate in good web forums, like wBBS. Seek out and develop good relationships with "local" family run computer suppliers for your hardware. Between myself, local supplier, and the boards... cost/performance along with no downtime allow a gratifying experience. :p
