Hi, I rencently bought a brand new Intel Pentium D 840 3.2gGHz DT 800FSB Socket 775 processor and a new mobo to support it. I installed all the hardware and as soon as I booted I went into my BIOS and the cpu temp was far too high for my likings. So, I removed the heatsink and reinstalled it and now it's right where I want it. However, windows will not even try to load. It's windows xp pro for the record. I can get to the screen to select "start normally, last good config, and safe mode ". starting normally results in an immediate reboot, as does last known config, and safe mode tried to load but after about a second and a half of all the clutter on the screen it reboots. Im not sure if this is a software or hardware issue so i hope this is in the right place. Anyway, I have no idea where to start trobleshooting. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.:)

sdcin - Welcome to the Board :)

If I understand you correctly you have installed a new mobo and processor and hitched up your old hard drive with XP installed. Is that correct?

Unfortunately you cannot do that and expect XP to boot up. When XP is installed it takes a fingerprint of the hardware that it sees on the system and if that changes it fails to work.

The answer is to make a repair install of XP as outlined in this MS KB article ....

How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
