    Hi
    Can anyone please help?
Im trying to network 2 pc s using W2k but having a few probs
Ive set up pc1 as John with workgroup Home
    ip; 192.168.0.1 subnet mask; 255.255.255.0

and set up pc2 as Tami with workgroup Home
    ip; 192.168.0.2 subnet mask;255.255.255.0
    default gate ip; 192.168.0.1

When i ping 127.0.0.1 from John it works o.k.
but when i ping 192.168.0.1 I get request timed out
I can also ping Tami and 192.168.0.2 o.k.

Everything pings o.k. on Tami except when trying to ping John and 192.168.0.1
    Messages im getting when trying to network through computers near me are;

John - Home is not accessible
The list of servers for the work group is not currently available.

Tami - \\John is not accessible
The network path was not found

The settings seem fine but it sounds like you don't have a network connection bewteen the PCs.

    How are you connecting them?
    - if directly from network card to network card you will need to be using a 'crossover' cable where a pair of the internal wires are crossed with them going to different pins at either end.
    - if via a hub/switch you will need to be using cables where the pins at each end are connected to the same wire.

If your network cards have diagnostic lights (connection, activity, etc.) you could check to see if the connection lights on both are lighted. If so you probably have the correct cable and need to check the speed/duplexing settings on both cards. They need to be the same.

    Thanks for replying Newt

To answer your question I am using a cross over cable and both lights are on green.
How do I check the speed and duplexing settings on the cards?

Saying that one of the cards is built in Computer (John) this is the one that having the probs with pinging and communicating, do you advise using a seperate card in this computer?
Ive also read on the net about conflicts could this be the problem and if so how do i change the IRQ s?
sory for all the questions but this has puzzled the hell out of me.

Sharing and Conflicts just incase this helps
    Resource Device
IRQ 11 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
IRQ 11 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
IRQ 11 NVIDIA® nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit (Dolby® Digital)
    IRQ 11 NVIDIA® nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface
    IRQ 11 TV-Station (SAA7134Capture with MK3-Tuner)
    IRQ 11 NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

    Thanks once again
    John:) :)

    John - that info helps.

More things for you to check or try:

Speed & duplex settings - the specifics on changing these will vary slightly with different brands of network card but if you go into your networking section and then to properties for the NIC, there will either be a place to set speed and another to set duplexing or they may be combined.

The default setting is usually auto and that can cause problems. Start out by setting both to 10Mbps Half-duplex. It's the slowest but also the most likely to work.

Then after a reboot, log on to both PCs using the exact same username and non-blank password.

Try from both (and in this order)

    - ping 127.0.0.1 and a return will show that IP is working on the PC. A failure will indicate a bad IP load and will need you to remove it and reload TCP/IP and all your networking settings.

    - If that works, try pinging the other PC by IP address from each of your PCs.

    - If that works, add a hosts file (or modify the existing one). File name is hosts with no extension. File location is %system%\windows\system32\drivers\etc. File content for the hosts file on your network should be (and %system% is probably C: )
    192.168.0.1 john John
    192.168.0.1 tami Tami

Then from a cmd prompt on John, ping tami and from Tami, ping john

    Post back with your results.

    Hi Newt,

Changed both speed and duplex settings on both computers to 10 Mbps and half-duplex.
Rebooted and logged onto both computers using the same user name and password.
I have also setup the hosts as you explained on both computers.

    Still getting same results;

    From John
    When I ping 127.0.0.1 it works o.k.
    When I ping 192.168.0.2 o.k.
When I ping tami it says "Pinging tami [192.168.0.1] request timed out ",
When I ping 192.168.0.1 or john I get request timed out.

    From Tami
    When I ping 127.0.0.1 it works o.k.
When I ping 192.168.0.2 and tami it works o.k.
When I ping 192.168.0.1 or john I get request timed out.

Its as if there is something not right with computer john s setting? but are exactly as:
Ive set up pc1 as John with workgroup Home
    ip; 192.168.0.1 subnet mask; 255.255.255.0
and set up pc2 as Tami with workgroup Home
    ip; 192.168.0.2 subnet mask;255.255.255.0
    default gate ip; 192.168.0.1

I have also put into john a new network card same type as the one in tami.
But still no joy :( there must be something wrong, it be something with all devices sharing the same IRC?

From John (which is 192.168.0.1 - newt)
    When I ping 127.0.0.1 it works o.k.
    When I ping 192.168.0.2 o.k.
When I ping tami it says "Pinging tami [192.168.0.1] request timed out ",
When I ping 192.168.0.1 or john I get request timed out.

Given the above and the type of network you are running, I'd have to say you have an error in the hosts file. If pinging tami returns a failure at john's IP, something for sure isn't right.

To make life a little easier in sorting this whole thing out, leave john at 192.168.0.1 and set tami to 192.168.0.30 which should cut down on my confusion at least. And change both hosts files to reflect that.

Are either or both PCs supposed to be connecting to the internet at this point? If so, is ICS set up? It's possible for ICS to do some fairly strange things and it will be easier to work the kinks out with it not in the picture right now.

Also as an added bit of testing and so you can hopefully have an operational network while working on this problem, install NetBeui on both PCs. That only needs a common workgroup name and different PC names to function. It lacks any of the testing utilities but it will be interesting to see if all is well with NetBeui.

Not a bad idea to keep it running either. Easier to have a secure network if you force most of your local sharing to use NetBeui.

Have you turned off the firewall on the 'John' machine?

Awk. Sometimes I worry about me.

seany202 - thanks for that suggestion. You've probably hit on the problem and for some reason, it just hadn't crossed my mind.
