I've managed to connect my desktop (with D-Link PCI adapter) wirelessly with my Laptop (preinstalled WIFI Card).

    The signal strength shows excellent.

I have assigned the desktop with 192.168.0.1 and the laptop with .2 but the ping = request time out.

Why is that? what do I need to do?
    Thanks

"Why" is because one or both isn't on the network with TCP/IP configured properly.

"What" is going to depend a bit on your exact setup so if you post what hardware and what OS versions, we can give you some troubleshooting suggestions.

I have Win XP Pro on both machines.
The Desktop is an Athlon 700 256 Mb Ram and the Laptop is Sony Vaio Z1SP with built in WIFI card (Intel Pro/Wireless 11 Mbps).

I think you may be right when you say it isn't configured properly but what am I doing wrong.
they have connected with the firewall off and with excellent signal strength but yet no Ping.

The workgroup name (peer to peer connection name) is the same and the computer names are different.

I can't see where I am going wrong!

Under Wireless connections (prop.for wireless connection) under advanced. What do you have checked? Are you using a router or access point, wireless cards?

    Here is a good article.

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/columns/cableguy/cg1102.asp

I don't think you have to manually enter anything use DHCP. Don't check IEE802.x Authentication. I think SP1 broke that. Start without WEP until you can get it going. Make sure you have TCP/IP bound to Printer and File sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks. Right click the wireless connection and View available networks, one should show up and go from there. Everything that is shared should show in My Network Places.

I use a wireless a router at home. Depending on your nics you should have good range. Metal objects like ducting in the wall will shorten your range.

Wireless works but not if I enable WEP!

The Desktop and Laptop have connected now and can share files etc.. But this is only if I uncheck the WEP enabled tickbox and the Network Share tickbox. Why is that? What does the Network Share checkbox do?
What can I do to make it still work with the WEP enabled.

On my desktop, if I try and tick the WEP checkbox, it won't even allow me to do so unless I make a whole new connection, whilst on the laptop, it allows me to do so without any problems. However, it doesn't connect with each other anyway (if I tick it).

    Any ideas?

The only thing I've read is it got broken somehow in SP1. People have had luck uninstalling SP1 but I don't think that is a good option. Firmware upgrades and driver upgrades work for some. There are a bunch of articles on WEP and authentication. I just got confused reading everything. I just want my network. Sorry I don't have any answers.
