I don't think this has been answered previously.

I have 2 PC's sharing a DSL connection via a Hub. Both have very similar hardware, almost identical, in fact, and are running Windows XP PRO, with 512Mg RAM. I will refer to them as "A" and "B ".

    My problem is that I can ping A from B, but I can't ping B from A.

As part of my troubleshooting I turned off all Firewalls, but this did not help.

I certainly would appreciate if someone could assist (again).

    Many Thanks.

That result (A from B but not B from A) almost certainly has to be a firewall issue. Maybe you are running 2 and only turned off one or something.

    What firewall(s) are you using?

    Thank you for the reply.

As I said, "I turned off all Firewalls, but this did not help ", although I am now sure you are correct in your assessment.

I discovered this problem as a result of troubleshooting when I found that pcAnywhere would not connect. I had just upgraded some equipment, and this required registering the new NIC on one of the machines.

One thing which appeared to be strange was that the 2 PC's had completely different IP Addresses, because I thought with the setup at least some of the numbers, maybe the first 2 sets, should be the same, but I have absolutely no idea whether this assumption is correct or not. I checked with my ISP and they assured me that everything was "kosher ".

One of the machines had had the same IP Address for quite a while and, knowing my ISP, I did not of course believe them, so, over a number of hours, I kept periodically releasing and renewing the Address on the other PC until it finally did change, and, as it happened, the first 2 sets of numbers did agree with the other. At that point I discovered that if I turned off the Firewall on this PC, then I could ping both ways.

The $ 64,000.00 question now is, I am using Sygate Personal Firewall Pro on both machines and both have IDENTICAL options set, so why can I only ping in one direction when the firewall is activated on both machines?
