After using stationery and inserting many pictures in emails for many months, suddenly NO pictures will display in OE6. Have checked & double-checked all the usual settings in Tools/Options to make very certain that Rich Text, HTML, Include Pictures with Messages, etc., etc., were checked.

Also checked the File Type settings for image files (jpeg's, gif's, etc.), and the default application listed for opening image files is IE6. That mystified me a bit, but perhaps is OK.

Am beginning to think that a file may have been corrupted or deleted, and am going to run the System File Checker and see what can find out!!!

ANY help would be so very much appreciated :)

Is the option to insert a picture greyed out?

In Tools - Options - Send is HTML selected as the default format?

Pictures Won't Display in OE 6

    Dear Brett,

Thanks so very much for responding to my question! No, the option to insert a picture isn't grayed out. But what happens when I do insert a picture is that a "red X" placeholder gets inserted instead. Similarly, when try to use OE stationery, nothing displays (no background image).

And yes, HTML is selected as the default format -- and "send pictures with messages" is also selected.

Did run the System File Checker last night, and there were several files with more recent dates that had been replaced by older files. One of them that might be significant was MSHTML.dll. Am thinking now (as have tried everything else!) that the problem might have to do with a corrupted/changed HTML file, as can open pictures with no problem in the usual imaging applications. So the problem seems to be related to IE6 & OE6.

If I wanted to restore the newer versions of these files (that am assuming are part of the IE6 upgrade), so I need to go to a Microsoft download site, or are they saved somewhere on the hard drive?? They sure don't seem to be stored in c:\windows\helpdesk\sfc :( That always mystifies me -- how does one restore files from an updated version of an application, like IE6? The Windows 98SE installation disk is not much of a help with updated files!!

Thank you again & again, brett. Know have rambled on waaaay too much here!!

    With much appreciation,
    Molly

Answer Found: Pictures Won't Display in OE6 Compose Mail

Solution to Problem of "Red X Placeholders" showing instead of inserted (attached) pictures when composing email in Outlook Express 6 (and OE5 as well):

Go to Start | Run and type this command

    regsvr32 /i shdoc401.dll

After a bit it should come back with a message that the DLL was registered.

If that doesn't fix it open regedit.exe and navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (note the dot before jpg)

For Content Type is, it should say "image/jpeg"

Same for .jpe and .jpeg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif For Content Type is, it should say "image/gif

In my registry the Content Type for BOTH the jpg and gif files HAD been "bmp" -- and that was the problem!!

Hope this can help someone else!!
