I was given a old dell C540 Latitude. XP pro 60gb 512 mb 4-M CPU 1.80GHz/1.20 GHz laptop to use for a while. I got a free wireless BB router from Comcast and everything seem to be working fine with Mozilla Firefox.

Never having a laptop before I was fooling around with it watching TV programs using Fancast and other sites. I notice that utube and the tv programs and I am trying watch are stuttering pretty bad and worse in in full screen mode.

    DVD's play perfect.

I am using Flash Player 10.I. I tried using the lowest quality setting, I disabled the video acceleration hardware as recommended on a Adobe forum, and it did not make a difference.

I uninstalled 10.1 and was going to try maybe v9 but could not find it anywhere, not sure if that would have helped or not, so I reinstalled v10.1.

Is the 512mb of ram and stock video card most likely the cause of the stuttering?

Hi gary7. 512 MB of RAM is the minimum to install and run Windows XP. I'm not surprised that you re having issues with video playback on websites with that low amount of RAM. I would upgrade the RAM to 1 GB at least in order to have a faster and more effiecient Windows XP experience on the machine.

Also have you installed the latest drivers for the video card?

Ok great. You can try shutting down all background programs that are running in the system tray in order to free up your computers resources for the time being.

My Netgear router reads connect speed @ 54 mb

Dell C540 Latitude. XP pro HD 60gb RAM 512 mb Processor 4-M CPU
    1.80GHz /1.20 GHz

    Mozilla FF

I even went to device manager to up date the video (mobility radoen
7500) card but there were no updates. On the Adaptor window I even
ticked off the one that said to check windows site also for updates also.

There are other versions of the 7500 driver, and I read a little about
refresh rate but but I had to DL a few things that I did not understand, so I passed.

I don't use it as my main computer, so until someone has more info I am
going to leave it alone. I went as far as I could, if I start
downloading stuff that I really am not sure what it is I will be asking
    for trouble.

That's your connection speed from your wifi router to your computer & not the internet speed.

Call your ISP & ask them your speed.

Retired, I have the memory info and user manual but did not the service manual, thanks!

I really would love to try to update the BIOS but I do not trust myself. I do know once the bios are messed up then I am sunk.

Is there a difference between flashing the chip set and updating the bios?
by me having to ask this question make me feel I sould ot mess with the bios,

I you feel otherwise please continue to give me a more detailed idea of just what I need to do to do the upgrade

gary, Google is your best friend at times. If you Google "how to Flash the BIOS safely" you'll get good info to help you.
Most importantly - follow the instructions stage by stage. If you lack the confidence to try, then get someone with the knowledge to do it for you.

If you need to upgrade the Video card Drivers, go to the Manufacturers website and enter your comps full detail.

It always pays to backup before you do any changes so that in the event of an error, you can Restore to previous state. Neil.

    One other thing.
Check that your CPU is operating at 1.8 Ghz and not the battery saving speed of 1.2

Right click on empty spot on desktop – properties – Screen Saver tab – Power (button) – power schemes.

Look for something like ‘Max performance' mode and select it.

The opposite: Your system will most likely not qualify for the 128MB of graphics memory.
