Photoshop CS hangs for like 1-2 minutes when I attempt to run it. Curiously enough, when the network is disabled it starts right up.

There is a strange file that starts up in conjunction with PShop and appears in the task manager until Pshop is shutdown: ~e5d141.tmp

I've heard this is related to Macrovision's SafeCast or C-Dilla software that is installed with TurboTax, but I haven't got that installed or any other Macrovision product for that matter.

Also, it didn't appear until I installed Photoshop so it must be involved with that.

Does anyone know of anything Photoshop uses when it starts to do this? Also, is there a way to trace this process?

I just checked ~e5d141.tmp with Process Explorer and Photoshop is listed as the parent.

Also did a run with Adaware & found nothing.

    Lucky you :)

I'll try and answer that question as and when my copy of CS is delivered - supposedly released over here 1st Nov, but no sign of it yet.

In the meantime a search on Google brings up several related hits, but no mention of PS

Take a look Here for a quick run-down on what is happening.

Details on ~e5d141.tmp is toward the bottom. A product activation thing and looks like they just don't have it quite right on your system. Or else you haven't done it.

Tech support for the product might be a good place to start. Otherwise, try uninstalling completely and then reinstalling.

Now have Photoshop CS installed on desktop and laptop - both activated and no delay on start up.

Task Manager shows 2 instances of ~e5d141.tmp running when Photoshop is running - slightly different file sizes on the desktop, both the same size on the laptop.

Neither was running until I activated Photoshop CS, so Newt was right about them being part of Product Activation.

Sorry I can't help you with this - hope the problem is now resolved.

It's strange because I don't have any MX 2004 products installed, nor have I ever. In addition, it seems that both Macromedia Director 8.5 and Director MX both exhibit the same 1-2 minute lag that Photoshop does. And they also share the same characteristic of starting right up the moment I disconnect from the internet.

How could a piece of Macromedia activation software for software that I've never installed (MX 2004) cause a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS in addition to Macromedia Director 8.5/MX ?? That makes no sense whatsoever.

As a footnote, I've uninstalled Adobe Photoshop CS and cleared my registry of all records, including the Macrovision SafeCast occurrence, without any change in behavior with Director.

    problem solved!

My default printer is connecter to the Powerbook in the other room that I access via http (because my computer is Win2kPro and I don't want to deal with a Linksys network). If the Mac is sleeping or offline, then the programs hang due to not being able to find the printer on the network. I guess select pieces of software run a printer check when they startup.

I changed my default printer and it fixed the whole issue instantly!

    Whew.

Thanks for posting back. That would certainly have caused the problem you had.

Glad to hear it was nothing to do with Photoshop.
