In MS Outlook I can send and received encrypted and signed emails with only the public and private keys I set up using PGP. I do not have, nor want, any registered certificates. Can the same be done in Thunderbird? It seems to want me to get a certificate first. Thanks.

Encrypting with PGP is different to self-signing features by mail clients.

With PGP, you can copy and paste back to Thunderbird. There's no PGP plug-in for Thunderbird/Mozilla Mail/Netscape Mail (to my knowledge), hence we don't have the convenience of the encrypting as in Outlook.

If you want to send encrypted or signed (digital signature) emails with Netscape Mail 4+/Mozilla Mail or Thunderbird, you will need to buy a certificate. And those email encryption is different to the PGP method. The other party needs to have email clients capable of reading encrypted of emails.

You might take a look at Enigmail extension for Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird. You also need a GPG program. You can check it out here.
