I recently downloaded a programme which is in my Windows\Prefetch folder. When I try and open it I am told that Windows is unable to open this type of file. It then asks me which programme I want to use to open it or offers to go online to find a suitable programme (this has proved useless).
Can anyone tell me how to open a PF File please. Thanks. Roger

You cannot open Prefetch files - *.pf - an explanation of Prefetch from here ....
The program you downloaded is not in the Prefetch folder, but, as you have run the program, there is an entry in the folder for that program.

If the programme I downloaded is not in the Prefetch folder which is where my Search told me it was can you tell me where it is please?. I used this programme to scan my computer for spyware and would like to re-scan or do I have to download it each time I want to scan. I can't find it anywhere else on my computer. Thanks Roger

    Hi Roger,
Assuming this is the application you are referring to:
    cwshredder...
    http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=248527#post248527

Did you do as Dave suggests may have happened, downloaded it to a temp folder that has since been emptied?

In any case this file is easily enough downloaded once again:
    http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

This time why don't you right click on the download link and select "Save As "
This will allow you to select the folder you wish to download it to (don't download to a temp file unless you intend to delete it or move it before a temp clean). Desktop is one choice, Making your own folder for downloads and naming "zips" (or downloads) is another. After downloading, you can make a special folder or subfolder for it, giving it name that makes since to you, and move "cwshredder.exe" to it. Create a shortcut to "cwshredder.exe" and keep that where it is handy for you.

Hi PeteC and Ann. Thanks for your replies. The programmes that I downloaded (or thought I downloaded) were the free online tools on the trendmicro web page ie Online Spyware Removal Utility and CWShredder. However having read Ann's reply I now believe that the actual programmes were not downloaded but just "run" from the web site-does this sound feasible.
I see from a Google search that I could get CWShredder from several sites but it was the additional Spyware programme that I was interested in having on my desktop to use weekly. I already have six other spyware programmes that I use weekly, AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster, Ewido Security Suite and MicroSoft Anti Spyware so I should be OK. Roger

Yes - online tools/scans run from the website. Some code may be downloaded to your computer, but not the software.
