Hello all, I was wondering if I could get some help. I would like to create a permanent swap file. I have 512meg of ram running Windows Me with a 45Gig HD. I know you are supposed to enter 2 ½ times the amount of ram. My question is, how do I write 2 ½ times my ram into the required boxes in the Virtual Memory Max and Min lines other then 1.280 meg which is 2 ½ time my ram. What is the formula for figuring that out?

    Thank You

    Hi, Don ~

With 512MB of good RAM, I think 2½ times is too much. With that much RAM, 1½ (768MB) is plenty if you make your swap file static.

Select Custom size: and enter 768 in both the Initial size and Maximum size boxes and click the Set button.

If you can, you may want to create a 776MB partition and use it as a logical drive for the Swap only to avoid defragmentation.

Bruce, how do I partition a 776 portion of my hard drive and how do I get my swap file on it? It's been a long time since I used DOS.

The only way you can make a new partition now is by using something such as Partition Magic.

With it you can make a new partition at the end of the drive for the swap file.
