Am trying to help a friend with a laptop running Windows XP Home. At every shutdown she gets the message "Other people are logged on ..." She is using DSL , does not have a LAN and is hardwired to the modem. She is concerned that other people are tapping into her Internet connection. She occasionally gets the message when logging out in with her laptop in a different city.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Steve. I'll have her do that.

It's another slow day at the office.

She is concerned that other people are tapping into her Internet connection. -> It's more like someone is tapping directly into her pc.

I would suggest this, also. Have her go to Start\Run, type in 'Services.Msc' and press Enter.
Locate these two Services in the list, Stop them, and set them to Disable.
