I'm also going to be building a new system in a few days using the same cpu. I've seen this already but don't know if it's something that effects all win98 setups or not. I did however, manage to get the patch without having to go through MS. I wanted to have it on hand just in case. If you want it, I can probably dig up the link for you. If things like this keep popping up in the future, those using win98 may be forced to upgrade sooner than they think. Note that there is no fix available for win95. If it were me, I'd try running the win98 patch on 95. What would you have to lose? :)

send me the link, and thanks. The problem seems to be a hit & miss. But if you're the one with a new build, you don't want to miss.

BTW, my trusted source says it doesn't apply to Win98 SE.

Good luck! Sometimes you need it when doing these sorts of things. :)

I have spent many hours on this one, so here goes.

    1) What/which Motherboard r u using.?
    2) On Intel Motherboards with 845 chipset DDR ram u will get plenty of slowdown problems & it is going to drive you crazy.
3)I have actually had the practical experience on this one.
Intel might not agree with this, but on M/Boards that use
SDRAM it installs and works ok. If u want to use Intel 845
chipset with DDR ram the rather use WIN XP it works well
    and is fast.

I have not tried any other Motherboards with 845 chipset & DDR ram.

My experience is based on customer installations.

    Best of luck.

    Charles.

I'm using an Asus P4PE. Haven't heard of any problems of that sort for this board. To late for me anyway. The boards already in the case with only drives left to put in. I guess I can't turn back now. :) Don't have XP right now but that's probably next in line.

What kind of RAM r u using is it DDR or SDRAM.

If u dont know how to identify, DDR has one cut-out and Sdram has 2 cut-outs.

    Rgds.

ASUS is also a good product.

I just built a P4/Win 98SE system based on the VIA P4X333 chipset with DDR 333 memory and it rocks! Most actions are completed before you release the mouse button. Apps load like a dream. I hope this info helps others.

    Charles,

Are you saying run the update or NOT run the update? I also have the ASUS P4PE with a 2.4G P4 (533fsb), & 512 stick of PC2700DDR ram. My only gripe on this combo is that I cannot seem to get the power management operating correctly. :( Cannot determine if it's the board, vid card (ASUS 8170DDR), or other, but the monitor will power up on anything, not just mouse or keyboard like it should.

Well, mines up and running and so far so good. No slow downs that I have noticed. I've got a ways to go yet before everythings installed and set the way I want (decided to go with a clean install rather than an image from the other puter). I suppose it could change with more stuff loaded. We'll see.

Oh; I was bitten by the bug that started this thread. That and the fdisk bug also. MS's patches worked as they were supposed to for both of them.

    Raselkirk,

I dont understand your question, R U questioning somthing I said ?? .

Anyway if you have powermanagement problems then I suggest that you go to ASUS webb and download the latest BIOS update for your MOTHERBOARD. Also download the latest updates for your system MSOFT operating system related. Gotot start upto windows upadtes & follow the onscreen prompts. One other suggestion is to go into cmos & reset all to defaults and try again.

    Cheers.

PLEASE GUYS DONT PANIC DUE TO MY 1ST COMMENTS AS I SAID I GET WIN98SE SLOWDOWNS WITH INTEL BASED MOTHERBOARDS WITH DDR RAM.

Charles, the above quotes led me to believe that you were experienced in boards using the Intel 845 chipset and were recommending AGAINST applying the MS "fix ". I took the "Best of luck then" comment to mean patching would do no good. Sorry for my confusion! As for updates, I have all the current latest patches and fixes for my equipment. I've e-mailed ASUS on the issue, and of course haven't heard a word from them...

    Raselkirk,

I believe we R missing each other somewhere.

    1) I have only experienced the slow down with Intel Moherboards that use the 845 chipset & DDR ram. (With Celeron 478pin or P4 478pin).
    2) Which MS FIX R U talking about.??

Sorry for the misunderstanding from my side.
    :)

    Charles,

I thought your remarks were concerning the original topic:

which is: "Windows Protection Error in NDIS with a CPU That Is Faster Than 2.1 GHz ". Apparently, the topic diverged through the threads and turned into something else.

Regardless, what suggestions would you be able to offer someone who has an ASUS P4PE, 2.4G Pentium 4, and 512K of PC2700 DDR ram? I'm not getting "slowdowns" per se, but have other minor issues that ASUS chooses to ignore...

    Thanks!

    Russ
