I have (Cable) Broadband and want to configure two PC's using a LINKSYS Router. I already had one PC connected to the internet so connecting this PC to the Router was easy. Now I want to add the second PC. The second PC has never been connected to the Internet through a Cable Modem. Can anyone instruct me on adding this second PC to the Router. The second PC has Win98se operating system. I know I will need to add an Ethernet Card to the second PC.

    Thank for the help.

Once you have the network card installed, you should be able to hook to a port on the switch part of the router, reboot the98 PC, and let the router set up values on the card for you.

If your browser and email are set up properly, you should be connected.

I threw in should because sometimes it needs a bit of work but not usually. If you get set up and it still doesn't work, post back.

Ok it's me. I installed the card. Connected the card to the router and I'm not connected. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Before suggestions, more info needed.

It sounds like you have the 2 PCs connected to the switch portion of the router. PC1 = the original & PC2 = the 98 system that isn't working.

    - Does PC1 work OK?
    - What OS is on PC1?

From PC2, do start~run~winipcfg and when the GUI window pops up, click the button to get all the detail.

    - write down and post the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway.
    - post the same info from PC1. Note that if it is 95/98/ME you will get the info from winipcfg. If it's NT/2K/XP, start~run~cmd and then from the DOS window, ipconfig /all.

Your system should be using DHCP, and the router should be providing DHCP services.

Your network configuration should look like this...

As goofy as it sounds here's the latest. I plugged the 2nd PC in the 2nd port on the router and no connection. So I knew port 1 was working with PC 1 so I unplugged PC 1 from port 1 and plugged PC 2 in Port 1 and it started working. So I said if that the way you need it I don't care. So I plugged PC 1 in port 2 and both PC's are connected and seem to be happy for now.

Thanks for hanging in with me. I get tired sometimes, but I don't give up.

LOL. Computers are like that some times.

    Glad it's working.

Did you leave the cables in place and just swap the PCs?
