I have a K6 233 system whose motherboard supports up to a K6-2 400 and has a AGP 2X slot. How much of a performance boost (with or without the CPU upgrade) can I expect if I upgrade the PCI video card to AGP?

The difference in upgrading the video would depend on how good both cards are. Odds are it would make a nice difference if the pci card is real slow...Upgrading both would start to put in the catagory of "for a few more dollars you could get a much newer pc. "

    AGP 2X

most newer pcs now come with agp 4x - 8x, finding a 2x agp card may not be easy.

The PCI video card is an original ATI All In Wonder card (Rage II, 4 megs). The AGP card would be a Matrox G200 (8 megs).

The CPU upgrade would be $25 including shipping. The video card upgrade would be free because I already have it. I upgraded the P3 system from it to a 64 meg 4X card.

I also wanted to keep the AIW card around for its TV tuner and video capture abilities, but the P3 now has a USB 2.0 box for that purpose. So now I'm clear to upgrade if it would be worth the trouble.

    Hi, TonyT.

It appears 2x cards are still readily available.

In case other readers of this thread are looking for a 2x/4x AGP card, there are several 2x/4x AGP cards available at NewEgg.

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) the 2x/4x AGP cards I linked above are compatible with a 2x-only AGP slot.

    Hi Hotaru,

The AGP interface is better than a PCI interface for graphics. If you had the choice of two cards with the same specifications only one was PCI the other AGP, the AGP would perform better.

If the $25 spent on that system will prove useful, it would be a good boost ($25 worth of experience would probably be useful to me :D )

    Matt
