I currently have an Adaptec AHA-2940/2940W connected to a Sony SDT-5000 tape drive (I have a Compaq Presario running XP Pro). I am having problems with false media errors. I have been told the problem is likely because of incompatabilities with this old card.

So, I am looking for recommendations for a low end replacement that will cure this problem and support the legacy 50-pin SCSI.

There seems to be lots of AHA-2940's around with different suffixes, so which are the newer ones? Are other brands better? Most of the Ultra SCSI cards support legacy but I can't see spending that much for something I'll never use. This is strictly for backup/recovery. TIA.

Can't offer too much help, haven't been into SCSI all that long.
    Suggestions:
Have a look at the SCSI controllers drivers. Obviously you have XP drivers for it. Are there newer versions? Try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling.
Adaptec would seem to be the top manufacturer, I would stick with them if I could.
Look for cards in your price range then see if they meet your requirements ( can usually type the model number and "specifications" into a search engine and get most information).
Try resetting the tape drive to another SCSI ID.
Last, but should be first, try reseating the connections.

XP's SCSI supports stinks! - They gutted support for most scanners and many other SCSI devices.

The Adaptec ASPI layer v4.71 doesn't work to hot either. - What many have done - even thought Adaptec says it won't work is to first install v4.71, reboot then "Upgrade" to ASPI v4.6.

There are many reason to do this, and it does work. A side benefit maybe improved CD burning depending on what software you use to burn. (Won't affect NERO, as Nero calls its own ASPI when it starts.)

Thanks for the replies (I think :) ). I guess I'll try to stick with Adaptec and see which models have the latest drivers. I hate to spend the money for a newer card if it will be no better then the current one.
