PC won't see the proper gateway!

    Hello all,

I have recently taken a job as administrator for a small network. It's a simple network and suffers from a a couple years without someone who could take care of the big picture. As a result there are two 4+ year old NetWare servers (Compaq) and two W2k clone servers, undocumented clone clients... and administration is much more of a hassle than it should be!!

Anyway, there is a rogue PC that suddenly insists on using the wrong default gateway for IP and I don't know how to make it use the right one. I believe that one of the NW servers does the DHCP. I've worked around this by assigning a static IP and designating the proper gateway, but I don't want to keep this network running the way my predecessors have done; I want to do it correctly.

    Help? Thank you -

    Jenni

What OS on the rogue PC? And is the gateway for internet access or do you have a routed local network?

And if the network is small enough and your available IP address pool large enough, static may be a better way to go than messing with DHCP. But if you do continue with it, I'm not so sure about using a NetWare server to do the job. I don't know NetWare well (and not at all since 3.x) but I'd think either M$ or Unix/Linux for that.

    Newt,

Thanks for posting. The rogue PC is Win98. I suppose the place is small enough to go with all statics. But in my experience as a consultant (I was with a consulting firm for seven years, though my expertise is messaging and straight admin) DHCP is usually preferred... so I'd prefer to solve the problem rather than continue with a workaround.

My background is NetWare, through current versions, and we'll be putting in a new Compaq server with NW 6, etc. Just so you know my leanings. I don't believe in OS as dogma, but I certainly have a preference.

As to what the gateway is for... I'm not sure about the terms you're using, but we use NAT and the clients as well as the gateway are on the 192.168.x.x network.
