Hi all. As you may know I have been having problems with the PC. But yesterday I have got a much worse problem. I was running Spybot to see if there was anything wrong with the PC and it found something along the lines of 'CoolWWW-' or so. I then wen't to delete this but the PC froze. I swicthed off, then on and it was frozen at the password screen. I swicthed of and on again but it was the same. I checked the leads, all was OK, I checked the batteries, and I replaced them, but it was still the same. I then left it for a bit ,and came back to see if it was alright. After switching it on, the PC made the 'beeping' noise, and then the PC continued to make the noise, as though it was dialing up, but it isn't a modem. It's the PC beeping. I then noticed that it would only make this noise if the keyboard was plugged in. It's a wireless PS port, can't remember what it's called. It's purple though. When it's doing this, the screen will go past the two screens and then stay black. Help appreciated.

Looks like your computer is infected with a variant of Coolwebsearch. There is a tool on that page - CWShredder which will remove it, but not on a computer which will not boot :(

We need to know the number of beeps or if the beeping is continuous and the make of the bios to identify the cause. On an AMI bios 11 beeps is a keyboard controller failure for example - see here for details ....

    http://www.google.com/search?source...s=GGLG,GGLG:2006-04,GGLG:en&q=bios+beep+codes

BTW the purple port into which the keyboard is plugged is a PS/2 port.

Judging from the problems outlined in your other thread a full format and reinstall looks to be the best option, but first the cause of the beeping bios needs to be sorted.

Guess you have no backups? :) Can you hitch the drive up as slave in another computer and copy your data off? Not too sure if the Coolwebsearch would affect the other PC - unlikely I guess.

You should be able to go to Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key just before you would normally see the Windows (loading) screen.

CWShredder fits onto a floppy disk, you could run it in Safe Mode.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't do anything. The keyboard wouldn't allow me to press any buttons. I already ran CWshredder, moments before I ran Spybot, and that found nothing? As for the beeping, it does the one beep as normal, and then it's as though it's constantly beeping, but it's not a proper beep. Unfortunately, I have no back-ups. I was going to get all of my songs and files and see if I could transfer them to another PC but don't know if I could. And to let you know, I have just plugged in another keyboard, and although there isn't as much beeping, it works?

If I plug in the other keyboard in, the PC starts to beep like mad and very fast. Any ideas? Keyboard hasn't been knocked in anyway what-so-ever.

This can happen when a computer goes into a "loop ", it does the same thing over and over again.

enrique, what do you see on the screen (what is the computer telling you)? Is it stuck at the Windows loading screen? Do you see a blank screen and just beeping?

Slow down :D . Tell us what you see and when it happens.

    :)

If I start the PC with the wireless keyboard in, it will "˜beep’ once, and then the PC will start to make a strange noise, similar to that when dialling up on a modem. It will do the "˜memory check’ screen where you can press "˜del’ to stop, and it also shows the slave, and drives etc, it then moves to the next screen which shows the boot thing at the bottom left hand side. Then the screen will change to a black screen and just stay like that. If, however I plug in a normal cable keyboard, same style connection PS/2 (< thanks PeteC), then it will boot up normally, past the two screens, onto the Windows screen, then onto the password screen. The keyboard will work. But if I was to swap the keyboards, having the wireless one in now, it would start to beep really fast and not work. Swap them again, and it is fine. This is literally, all of a sudden. Spybot crashed, re-booted and it started happening.

I hope I’ve cleared it up what’s happening. I’ve been clear as possible. Hope someone has got the answer.

One problem may have led to the others.

You say the standard PS/2 keyboard works fine.

From your previous thread, Wininet.dll is an Internet Explorer file. Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel there should be a listing for Microsoft Internet Explorer. Click remove and there should be an option to repair IE, try that. If it still gave error messages after that, I would download the latest version of IE, but before installing it, uninstall the old version (if possible), then install the new version.

Let us know if these help overcome the error message problem.

After that we could try getting the wireless keyboard working.

I would also try downloading Spybot again, uninstall the current version and install the new one. I would then boot to Safe Mode and run Spybot there.

If you have a sick registry, you may be facing a reinstall, although it sounds like that itself is going to be a problem. You may have to consider your options if it looks like Windows is failing.

Yeah, the normal one is fine.

No, there is no option for IE at all in the Add/Remove.

I’m not allowed to download IE because it says I have a newer version, and because it’s not in Add/Remove, I can’t uninstall it. I’m going to try the Spybot now, I’ll post results.

Wininet.dll is contained in the following files:
    ie6oem.exe
    ie6setup.exe
    ieak6opt.cab
Search your Windows drive for any of those files. You could run the .exe file, you should get the repair option there. If you have the .cab file you could extract the wininet.dll file and replace the current one.

Just searched for all three of them and it hasn't found one. It found 'IE6SETUP.EXE-36244E77' in the Windows 'Prefetch' as a PF file but that was it? Is it not possible to download the 'wininet.dll' from somewhere and overwrite my one?

Uninstall your wireless keyboard drivers/any associated programs and reboot. Scan your computer with updated virus and spyware scanner. If all is clean, shut down the system and plug in your wireless keyboard. Switch on. If it still does not work, your keyboard is toast.
