Hi folks, hope I've got the right forum here. I have just bought a new PC and would like your comments on buying a "PC to PC data transfer" software package. I have quite a lot of "stuff" on my old computer that I would like to safely transfer over to the new computer including some programs (is this even possible). TIA for your help and advice.

Are the two pcs linked by network in any way? That would make it much easier. If not, then a USB flash drive would be the easiest if both have USB ports. When transferring programs, copy the directory from the Program Files directory from the old computer to the new computer. You will have to create your entries on your Start->Programs button. You will probably also have to copy some files that are in the Windows folder such as DLLs. You will know those when you first run the program.

Yes. That can be done. But the program my not run properly. I myself have copied at least two programs from one PC to the other.

I find after copying it is best to reinstall the software.BEFORE even attempting to run it. Making sure of course that it goes into the proper folder and you will then be more sure of the Registry and Startup Entries being set up properly.

That's what I thought BillyBob but some of the programs are real old and I'm sure I don't even have the disks anymore. But my initial question was about PC to PC data software programs. Are there any that you would recommend.

    Hello Lorreen,

XP has a built in way of transfering files and settings:

Enter Files and Settings Transfer Wizard into the Help and Support applet's search box on the Start menu for how to.

Won't work with the programs though - they have to be re installed. There is a type of program that can be copied, if the program is an execute and run type - meaning doesn't need installation.

    Regards - Charles

I would say that there are many of the type you ask for but I cannot recommend any as I do not use any.

All three of my PCs are 100% independent of the others. They are connected to each other and the Internet via a Router which is one of the better investments that I ever made.

Years ago I had a go at sharing some stuff between machines. It all went well until one machine decided that it was no longer happy. So I decided right then and there to give up sharing. Now things are on either one machine or the other. Some games are on both and we play then over the LAN connection.

BillyBob, I had the same experience with sharing and have decided to go the wireless route too. Thanks for your responses.
