Hi sachin, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :) Would you please provide some more info for us. Your System Details and the OS your currently using.
Have you tried more than one USB port? What happens if you plug a flash drive in the same port? Neil.

Seems to be some power issue.

If you have the USB powered drive, the USB may not have enough power for the drive. The computer thus works for some time & reboots.

    What's the motherboard ?

You can find the specs of your computer using Speccy (free version). The opening screen lists your motherboard - see snip from my PC below ...

As retiredlearner asked in post #2
An answer would be helpful :)

Do you have access to another external hard drive - either your own or a friends to try and see if the same issue occurs?

Issues like this are very hard to solve especially at distance and relying on the poster's responses and experience. As you state that you are relatively inexperienced in computer matters there may be some actions that we would be reluctant to suggest as, in the wrong hands, they could render the computer useless.

It is very important that you respond to all questions asked as the information you give helps us to isolate the cause of the problem.

You have not yet answered retiredlearner's question .....
    Some further questions ....

Your motherboard supports up to 8 USB ports, 4 of which are at the rear of the computer. Are you plugging the drive into one of the front ports on the computer case or into one of the rear ports? If you are using a front port try one of the rear ports.

If the external drive is plugged into the computer when you boot up do you have the same problem?

Do you have a friend with a computer? If so try plugging the drive into that computer and see if the same problem occurs. This test will establish if the problem is with the external drive or your computer.

Please post the values from Speccy for the motherboard voltages for +5v, +3.3v and +12v. On the opening window of Speccy click on Motherboard and you will see the screen below showing these voltages.

I would like you to change a setting on your PC. The computer is currently set to restart on System Failure - the default setting. I want you to change this to no restart which may bring up a blue screen with information regarding why the computer has stopped and show a Stop Error and possibly the file which is causing the error. It is straightforward .....

Start > Control Panel > In the upper right hand corner select View by Large icons > click on System - screenshot of System window below.

In the left hand panel click on Advanced settings > Startup and Recovery > Settings button (screenshot) and in the Settings and Recovery window under System Failure uncheck Automatically restart (screenshot). Click on OK> OK and close the System window.

The computer will now not automatically restart on System Failure and present a blue screen as noted above. Let us know what happens.

Thank you for your detailed post...

my pc has 2 front ports & 2 rear ports...tried on both rear ports, same result

tried starting computer with hd plugged in & plugging in after starting pc ..same result

tried it before ..blue screen is not coming when pc restarts

plugged in & played videos from sandisk pendrive..there was no problem of restarting..
I think this is the most crucial question that I must be answering...however presently I am having a bit difficulty in finding another pc...shall try this as soon as I get access to another pc..

The +12v supply from the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is way out of line - it should be as close to 12v as the other voltages are to their nominal values (3v & 5v)

There would seem to be a problem with the PSU which needs to be checked out. I cannot tell you whether or not this is the cause of your problem.
    Agreed!

    Re post #14 .....

From here for your information ....
I think the answer to this is yes, but ask your local repair shop to check out the PSU first. It would still be useful to check out the drive on another computer if at all possible - my guess is that there will be no problem on another computer.
