    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me. My computer has been giving some real problems lately. And the last straw came when Windows decided (all by itself) to remove my video and sound drivers a few days ago. So, I decided it was time for a fresh install. I backed up all my files popped in the CD and started the process.

After I deleted my partition, however, I realized my problems were a bit more than an annoyance. I can't get the install process to finish. For some reason, my PC restarts before the initial process of formatting and copying the install files completes.

The point where it shuts off varies, so it doesn't seem like software issues. I've seen it shut off in the middle of formatting the drive as well as at various times during copying the install files. I started to think that this meant I was having some issues with hardware, but then I popped in my Linux CD (OpenSuse v 10.0) and now I have that OS running perfectly on my drive.

Has anyone encountered something like this before? If so, what did you do to fix it? Is there anything that will fix it? Is this really a hardware issue?

I would really appreciate any help / suggestions / anything.

    Thanks a lot,
    Douglas

PS. I have a Windows XP Professional CD with SP2 (just in case that info is important)

Could be some problem with hard disk partition(s). Since now you have successfully installed Linux, remove the Linux partitions (Linux fdisk) & try to load Windows again.

Examine the Setup log files for anything that may indicate what may be causing the problem. To do this, press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt after the first restart, and after any subsequent restarts, if Setup stops responding. In the Windows folder (usually C:\Windows), look for the Pnplog.txt file. This log file is only created during setup if there is an issue that is detected with hardware. The log file should include the hardware that Setup will skip on the next restart.

You can also review the Setupapi.log file, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file (in the Windows folder) to try to determine which device Setup was trying to detect when it stopped responding. To locate the device that is the most likely cause of the issue, read the last 10 to 15 lines at the end of the files.

Note: You may have to look for the last class installer to load in the Setupapi.log file. This may tell you the device class instead of the specific device.
