    Hello all,
I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on an HP P/C. I have been hit with a trojan.Startpage virus.
Symptom: Upon starting IE6.0, my homepage has been changed to about:blank and my Symantec AV pops up a notification window with the following in it:

    Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
    Event: Virus Found!
    Virus name: Trojan.StartPage
    File: C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER~1.ROB\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll
    Location: C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER~1.ROB\LOCALS~1\Temp
    Computer: ROB
    User: Owner
Action taken: Delete succeeded : Access denied
Date found: Tuesday, January 25, 2005 8:25:42 PM

I have run a system scan using Symantec AV in safe mode, but nothing was infected (according to it).
I then installed and ran Ad-Aware 6.0, it detects a few registry files as being infected. I fix them, but the problem comes back again.

I installed and ran Hijackthis, here is the log file:
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I have run a search for the sp.dll file but can not locate it.

Any help in decoding my problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    ~Rob

    Welcome to WindowsBBS hotdram :)

Run eTrust online scan and see if it cleans startpage.
Download the latest version of Ad-aware (SE 1.05), install and update.
Download CWShredder 2.0 from here. Save it to the desktop. Double click to install. Open CWShredder from the new shortcut on the desktop, close ALL other windows and click fix. Reboot to safe mode.

Open C:\Temp if present, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open the control panel, then internet options and delete the temporary internet files, checking the box for offline content. Then open the Java Plug-in, click the cache tab and then clear. This will only apply if you have installed Sun Java.
Open Ad-aware and run in full scan mode. Delete all it finds.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.

Run another HijackThis scan and if still infected with the res://C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER~1.ROB\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html and O18 - Filter: text/html - {224F67E2-393B-47FD-B2F7-55AF2EF12D28} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\piokgo.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain entries, download and install Reglite. Open and copy/paste the following string in the address window then click go.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

Double click on the AppInit_DLLs entry to open a "Data Editor" properties window. If the Value line contains a .dll filename, copy/paste it here.

Thank you noahdfear for the instructions. I will attempt those at home this evening and post the results here.

    Well,
I tried to run eTrust Online and can not. I get the error bar message that says "Your Security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer "
After searching this site for a solution to that issue, I turned all my security settings to the lowest level and enabled all the Activex control radio buttons, but I still get the error bar message.
    I am completely lost now.

Skip the scan and do the rest. Try scanning again when done. See if you have the same results with Panda ActiveScan.

I followed all instructions. The Hijackthis scan still shows the sp.dll line item, but it does not show an O18 - filter xxxxxxxx line item entry. The pc is still booted in safe mode now, therefore I cannot copy the listing to this site now.
I am posting using my Pocket PC. If need be, I can reboot to normal mode and post the hjt log. For now, I will check this thread via my Pocket PC.

    Thanks for the help,
    Rob

Forgot to mention, I ran Reglite, the value line for AppInit_Dlls was blank.

    Regards,
    Rob

Run CWShredder again then reboot to Windows and post a new log.

    Ok,
I re-ran CWShredder in safe mode, then rebooted to normal Windows mode.

Please note, this time when I started IE6 to post this, I still got a virus notification from Norton (see first post) but the start page was the default start page from HP (A Netscape page), not about:blank.

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix the lines above.

    Then start APM.
In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO dll from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow. If it's not listed, move on.

Reboot and scan with AdAware. Delete all it finds.

Again, reboot to safe mode, this time logon to the Administrator account. Open C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.ROB_XXXXX\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Empty the recycle bin and reboot back to Windows.

    Try running eTrust and/or Panda.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

I should note, I am in normal Windows mode now, I startedIE6.0 and reset my homepage to the desired URL. I then exited IE6.0 and started it again. The browser opened up to the homepage I desired (no more hijack, and no window that pops up with a virus warning (like Symantec did)) :)
However, the sp.dll and other about:blank entries are still in the HJT log file. If I restart my machine, will I get the virus back?
Should I fix the "bad" things in the HJT log file?

    Thanks again for your help,
    Standin' by, Rob

I have just figured out how to get eTrust Online to run on my machine (had to add CA's website to the trusted zone in order for the ActiveX stuff to work). I am currently running their scan. I will post here if it finds anything.

EDIT: eTrust scan complete, no infections detected.
Should I now fix the stuff that doesn't look right in HJT, by selecting "fix" or should I reboot to safe mode and delete the files in my temp directory?

    ~Rob

edit note: Rob, I don't want to do a normal reply here for fear Dave, Mark, Lonny, or some other expert will think I am working on your problem. I would but it's a little complex for me. I notice that the BHO and some trash in that temp folder (including the bad .dll) are still showing up. You need to make another reply and say if you did remove that as Dave had asked or not. It will make a difference in how you proceed. Otherwise, except to do what he posted if not already done, hold off until you get further instruction. Some removals don't fix things but simply mask the problem. Newt

Scan again and fix the following.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER~1.ROB\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDF38BD3-95E2-4FAD-A8FD-66DCFABF097F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\piokgo.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Reboot, surf a bit and run another scan, then post the log.

Do you have Spybot Version 1.3? If not, download it from my signature and install. Allow it to load SD Helper. Open it up and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install, enable all protection and update. Check for updates regularly. Then, still in Spybot, click tools button, then IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file.
    Then download and install IESpyad.

That will give you some added layers of protection against unwanted parasites.

    Ok,
    I fixed all but this one: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background. It wasn't there when I ran HJT.
After that, I rebooted to normal mode, launched IE6.0 without any issues. I surfed a bit and reran HJT.

I downloaded the SPYBOT 1.3 and other s/w as mentioned but have not loaded them yet.

    Newt,
Thanks for also taking the time to review my problem. An extra set of eyes never hurts. I did remove the items as Dave requested early on, but they came back, so I left them there as I mentioned, until Dave responded back with his latest instructions, which seem to have cleared them off, as shown by the latest HJT logfile.

    Dave,
Thank you VERY much for your assistance in this matter. It is greatly appreciated. Do I appear "clean" at this point and just need to beef up my security measures (with the aforementioned s/w) or should I standby for more instructions?

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO HELPED :)

    Rob
