I have only seen one other problem like this one. I was replacing a Maxtor HD because the cache was defective and inoperable. The WD copier was humming merrily along when I got an error reading source message and the transfer stopped. The computer locked - not normal at all. Now, when I power up XP and Logon, XP immediately logs me off and "restores settings ". I have tried using the recovery console 'R' from the XP CD to restore the nt* files and rebuild the boot.ini but I am missing something because the problem persists. Also, there is no rebuild option available from the XP CD setup screen. This is an HP Pavilion with the weird HD header file.

Would upgrading Home to Pro solve the problem? How much data would I lose?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If I understand correctly the disk copy process stalled - if that is the case the Maxtor should be unchanged, but the implication is that the Maxtor will no longer boot - is that the case?

The Maxtor is faulty as you note so your best bet may be to make a clean install of XP on the WD, hitch up the Maxtor as slave and, if it is recognised, copy your data across.
Similar to a reinstall, but I would never recommend upgrading a drive with a sick OS.
In theory your data is still on the Maxtor - the question is - is it accessible?

FWIW this may be of interest ......
