Have just recently networked a desktop Pc On win 98 se with a notebook
on windows 2000 sp4 and all went well as far as the networking both machines can see each other and can access the desktop from the notebook but when trying to access the notebook from the desktop it asks for a network password? which must have been created in the past by someone
who had networked the notebook before but not sure how to sort this ?
I do not want to have to re-install the OS I even did try to setup up a different user account but this did not help.
    wondering if anyone can help
    thanks in advance

    Rodger.

It's wanting a user name and password from the machine you are trying to connect to. Enter the same info you use when you boot the machine up.

Both machines have to be in the same domain / workgroup
Both machine have to have the same username and password.
Did you turn on File sharing on the laptop ?

btw...surf the "networking" category here at windowsbbs. This is a common question.

If your questions is how to get two computer talking, then it's not really a pw issue...albeit still a sicky point.

If your question is how to find an unknown password...sorry, can't help you in this forum. It breaks the rules.

Try the default Administer and that password. For the machine you are trying to access. Or give the User Account permission on the machine.
Periodically my son needs to access my machine and we aren't formally networked. I have simple filesharing disabled like Windows 2000. He is using XP Home. This always works.

Windows 2000 computer needs to have a user defined on it with the same username .. and password ... as what you sign on to the 98 computer with.

I'd agree with all the folks who point toward the username/password logon issue if the 98 PC could not get to a share on the 2K machine but the direction you are having problems, it certainly does point to passworded shares on 98 at some point since NT systems just don't work that way but 9X systems did/do.

The forum posting rules do forbid (as pointed out) us giving help in circumventing password protection but I'm going to treat this as a specialized case since if you have physical access to the 98 machine, you can see all the contents assuming the only issue is a passworded network share.

Try going into the NIC properties on 98 and unchecking the 'file & printer sharing' feature then rebooting. I think that will zero things for you. Don't have a 9x machine to play with so can't say for sure.

If that does not work, remove networking altogether (remove the NIC from device manager when booted to safe mode, shut down, remove the physical NIC, reboot and shutdown again, reload the NIC and networking).

Make sure you have DUN 1.4 loaded on the 98 PC. Best way is probably to download it and install it.
