I had a power outage yesterday. Ever since I get this error message when I try to open my NS messager. "The pass command did not succeed. Mail server xx.x.xx.x responded: Mail storage service unavailable, wait a few minutes, and try again." Well, I've been waiting 24 hrs now! I think my mail password got reset with the power outage. How do I correct this. I can get my new email off the server by going to myemail.com. So, the password is ok. Just not working in NS Messager.
    Help
    Bob

    Hi Bob,

Try resetting your password in Preferences. Go into:
Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Passwords | Manage Stored Passwords

Remove your Mail password. When you access your Mail, Netscape should then ask for your password. This may do the trick. If not, then you most likely need to speak with your ISP.
    Keep us posted.

My ISP will not give me any support with Netscape Messager. Any more idea's how to wipe out this error message, and get me back online with Netscape. My tech support said NS is a rotten program. They must be a MS company (COX)!

    Hi Bob,

Isn't that frustrating? There will probably be less and less Netscape support from ISP's in the future.

Under normal circumstances I would say it is a server problem (Cox). I have had that error a couple of times, and in each instance it was my ISP at fault. However, as you had a power outage, I have to wonder how that might be factored into your problem.

I also note that you had the same problem back in November last year. Do you recall how you solved it then: Netscape mail PASS command error Not to worry if you don't recall.

Did you reset your Mail Server settings after the power outage by chance? Have you tried disabling your Firewall and Virus program to see if this will allow you to get your Mail? I'm grasping at straws here... Let us know.

    Ramona,
I did what you said, removed my password, ran email, it asked for my pass word, still the same. One other thing, I can compose email and send it, but I can't retrieve it I did disable my auto virus, no firewall. I use a router. I don't remember how I fixed it last year...bummer! I didn't keep any notes in my log book about it. It must have been really simple. What if I reinstall 7.1, think that will help?

    Hi Bob,

I don't think reinstalling Netscape will benefit you, so hold off on that for now. Here are a few workarounds that you might try:

    Go to your Mail Preferences:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

    Disable: Empty Trash on Exit
If not enabled then empty the Trash folder

If you are using a Theme other than the Default Modern Theme, revert back to the Modern Theme. This is one of the most likely causes of inaccessible or disappearing Mail.

    Compact your Mail Folders
    Open the Mail Window
    Select: File | Compact Folders

    Clear your Cache and History
Cache: Edit | Preferences | Advanced Cache
History: Edit | Preferences | Navigator | History

    Close Netscape:
    Open Windows Explorer
Browse to the Mail Account Folder
Delete all files with an MSF extension Do NOT delete any files WITHOUT the MSF extension.

Check the File Attributes in the Mail file Properties. Ensure they are not set to "Read Only ".
    Close Netscape
    Browse to the Mail folder
    Right click the files
    Select: Properties
Remove the tick beside "Read Only" (if necessary)

This may be pointing to a profile corruption. As a last resort, Create a New Profile and see if the problem remains. Guideline HERE

Let us know if you have more questions.

Do these one at a time?

What do you mean by "tick "

    Hi Bob,

Yes, do them one at a time in order to nail down which, if any, could be the culprit. This may be an exercise in futility, but let's cover all the bases.

See this Screen Shot looking at the "Attributes" section. If your Mail files are Read Only there will be a tick/checkmark beside "Read only ". I doubt this will be the case, but if so, remove the checkmark.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Well, I did get it resolved. It was my password that wrong! Tech support from Cox, was a great help. Got the right guy this time. Just reset my password, but lost all my mail. No big deal.
I want to thank you for all your help, Ramona!

    Hi Bob,

Glad to hear that your problem is resolved! The PASS Command error is a server error, which is your ISP. At least you found a friend Tech this time.

Did you check your Mail folder on the HD? Your mail files may very well be intact.
