A parrallel port CD drive will not be recognized by Win98 setup. This type of thing came after it's time. Basically, you are trying to get a IDE device to go through a parallel port that was originally intended for a printer.
It would be better to copy the setup files to the hard drive and run setup from there. In dos use these commands. Use the CD letter for the X below.
    md c:\win98
    copy X:\win98\*.* c:\win98
    sys a: c:

Turn off computer, and disconnect the parallel CD, it may cause a problem during setup. Take out floppy and boot up, the hard drive will be bootable after the last command.
    c:\win98\setup

But...setup is on CD ...Lets try this...Can I copy the files to the hard drive by putting it in a different computer ...then install it in the one I'm trying to use ; and run it from there?
The hard drive is new, formatted but has nothing on it.

Yes. That would probably be the best thing to do. Copy the files to the drive, put it back in the computer you took it out of and then run setup.

In a way, my previous post was doing exactly that, copying the files from the CD onto the hard drive, by using dos commands.
I think it may be easier for you to R & R the hard drive, and doing the copying with a working windows computer.

If the folder you copied it to is named win98 you have to first change directories. At the c: prompt type the following lines pressing enter after each line.

    cd win98
    setup

    That should get you there.

Sorry , I reformatted the drive...following the guide in the post previous...F: is cd drive...I get invalid drive specification...
    C:\WINDOWS>copy F:\win98\*.*C:\win98
same thing if I replace the last with \*.*D:\win98
What am I missing? Now I can't seem to copy the files to the hard drive.

This 'invalid drive specification' could have been that F: is the invalid drive. If you were to do a 'dir c:\win98' anything show up? If you do 'dir c:\win98\setup' it would show if setup was copied.

You seem to have access to a working computer. Take the hard drive out of the old computer, look at the end of the drive where the ribbon, the 40 or 80 wire thing, plugs in. There is a jumper there, and a diagram on the top of the drive. This diagram shows how to set the drive so it a Master or Slave or Cable Select. If it is at the CS position, leave it there. If Master, set it to the CS or Slave position. Plug it into the computer you are on now (powered off, of course), onto the same ribbon the current drive is on. Copy the files from the CD's Win98 folder to the drive's Win98 folder.
The drive letters for all drives on the current computer may be changed around, your old drive should be D:. If the current computer has it's drive partitioned, your old drive will still be D:.
When you remove the drive, they will be back as they were.
Be sure to set the jumper back to it's original position if changed.
When you put the drive in, boot up with the floppy, choose without CD support, and use this command.
    c:\win98\setup
Be sure to remove the floppy when prompted by windows setup, this will occur before the first reboot and after copying of files.
When the install has finished, install the motherboard drivers as the first thing, then do the video, then sound.
If you have a PCI (internal) modem, remove it when you put the drive back in. You can install it after the other hardware drivers are installed and everything is working. This will save you some problems doing it this way.

Yes mark62..I change the jumper when going from one computer to another. I have found that winfile should work for copying the disk to the drive.but...(windows)....now I get an error not enough room...good grief its a 4gb drive...
also when I put the drive back in the working computer setup.exe was right there.
Think I should delete it all , reformat ? I have replaced all the files that were listed as already existing. This should be easy I don't know why its so frustrating. Thanks again mark62

Not need to format, just make sure there is only the Win98 folder, and it contains 98 files (amount, not the windows version), put it into the computer, boot with floppy, and run setup.
Make sure you use \ and not / in the command line. Big difference to dos.

I have progress...I deleted all the files on the drive. Then I copied only the win98 folder from the cd...put it in the other pc....and setup actually started..cool..but...message 'su0013' if you have HPFS or NTFS you must create a msdos boot partition....
Well now; I see this as progress. But I have no idea in hell how to create a msdos boot partition. (I live in Hell, Michigan so I can say that)
My best guess is that fdisk might help? I've not tried that but since the drive is new and I've only formatted it maybe a bit more is needed to prepare it for use?
Also I don't know if I have HPFS or NTFS.

Go get Delpart, it will fit on the bootdisk. This will delete the partition, a kill all for partitions that Fdisk may not be able to delete. Then use Fdisk to create a new partition. Fdisk is menu driven, it is easy to do.

Here is how to use fdisk and format to ready the HD for Win98.
    At A:\> type fdisk enter
press "Y" enter for large disk support
at FDISK Option select "1" enter
at Create DOS Partition or logical DOS Drive select "1" enter
    Verifying drive integrity, **%
press "Y" enter at do you wish to use the maximum available size for Primary DOS Partition
and make the partition active (Y/N)..?
If you want to partition the disk set the size of your primary.
    Verifying drive integrity, **%
you then get a message to RESTART your system for changes to take effect
To create a second partition, you must create a extended partition and then create the logical drive(s) or other partitions.
YOU MUST REBOOT and then format AFTER FDISK.

I might be way off base here but this sounds suspiciously like you've got a drive overlay installed on the drive and aren't allowing it to load before booting from the floppy or running setup. I've run into this myself so.... How old is the computer? Did you use the manufacturers formatting tool to format the drive? If you boot the computer without a floppy and watch the screen do you see a message saying press x to boot from drive a?

Well now..I have used fdisk...enabled large disk etc....but my copied win98 file(s) seem to be ..no they are...corrupt . I've copied them a few times. Setup does run!!
Maybe I should start a new thread for this new problem?
I really thank you for the suggestions...I do have progress!
How do you suggest I copy the win98 files to my drive to get the best quality?
