I installed a program called pagedefrag from Microsoft TechNet.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897426.aspx

I use this program on my desktop and it runs perfectly. The laptop is a different story. This program defrags the page files on reboot. On the laptop this program does not work. After the system reboots, the laptop freezes and the defrag process never starts. In order to get back to my desktop, I have to remove the battery and unplug the computer. I then have to reboot from "last good configuration ". Why the difference between the desktop and the laptop? I'm stumped on this one. Thanks.

I couldn't get your link to work??? PageDefrag

Be sure you have adequate free space to run defrag. It sounds like a bug so perhaps reporting it to the author would get you some help.

I did notice a recommendation that suggested that the disk free space could be fragmented and might benefit from running another program suggested by the author.

Free space and memory is not an issue. My HD is 160GB with 95% free space. I also have 4GB memory installed. Ran Contig with no effect.
It is my belief this has something to do with the dual core processor. I run two defragmenters; the XP defragmenter and SmartDefrag. The final result is a HD that is still 40% fragmented.

No, the number of processor cores has nothing to do with fragmentation. The problem lies elsewhere.

Is the fragmentation due to the hibernation file on the laptop? If so, you could delete the hibernation file, defrag with the XP defragger and then re-enable hibernation.
Anyway, the defrag analysis report ought to list the fragmented files, so once that is known, your problem can be solved.

It could also be due to filesystem corruption, although in such a situation, the defragger will automatically refuse to run until the corruption is fixed. Try running chkdsk /r once.

Also, don't run 2 defraggers..one may undo the work of the other. Just pick one and stick to it. To solve your current problem, you can download the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009 Pro from their official website and try defragging with it. It's a powerful defragger (I use the full version) and works very well in automatic mode. You can also run a boot-time defrag with it for the MFT and paging file.

    Good luck.

You got it! The hibernation file was the culprit. It never entered my mind. Thanks a million.
