I am using Word 2000 and am numbering the pages from Page 1. However when I select Insert>Page numbers and select Top/Right hand it puts the number in the top left hand. That is the first problem. The next one is that when printed out, instead of printing it as the appropriate number eg 1, it prints it as {PAGE }. 'Help' tells me that in fact it is actually printing the 'Field' code and to prevent that I should press Alt+F9 which I do and notice that as I repeatedly press Alt+F9 it alternates between {PAGE } and 1. Leaving it at 1 (i.e. Page 1) it still prints out as {PAGE }. I now also notice that although on the screen the page is numbered 1, when I go to Print Review it shows up as {PAGE }. After spending an hour with this irritating problem trying to permutate a fix I finally had to print it without the numbers. I can find no further explanations on this subject in the HELP files, so am appealing to anyone for an answer! Incidentally if the number is placed in an alternative position it still prints the 'Field' symbol {PAGE }.

    Kind regards,
    Pat

Pressing Alt/F9 toggles field codes off. Pressing it again toggles field codes back on. Try pressing Alt/F9 only once to turn the field codes off permanently.

Or, in Word, go to Tools>Options>View tab and uncheck "Field Codes," click OK.

For the page number position problem, go to View>Header and Footer and see if the problem is with spacing in the header area. If you've been using the Header and Footer feature to insert page numbers, use Insert>Page Number instead.

    Thankyou Miz,
The page number positioning seems to have sorted itself out but the field code you mentioned was already unchecked. However having given me a clue, I did find another Field codes box under Tools>Options>Print tab and unticking it did the trick. Thanks again Miz; my sanity is restored!

    Kind regards,
    Pat
