or some similar message when I try to access Microsoft.com or the Windows update site. I remember seeing something on Windows help net about a cure for this. It was a long time ago and it involved something about comunications set up. I've searched but can't find it. I need to down load the VM fix.

Welcome to the Help BBS charlibob

Check your Security settings for the Internet Zone. They have to be Medium or lower for the Updater page to work properly.

Then just to be sure, use this link to the MS Windows Updater page.

    Cheers. :)

Over the years on various ocassions, I've found it difficult to access Microsoft sites with Internet Explorer, when at that exact moment I could do it with another browser. Why? Who knows. But the situation has always been temporary. Although the temporary time could be a few days. I just chalk it up to gremlins. Accessing sites is not an exact science.

Thanks all, but so far no help

I have tried all your suggesitons. Specifically two problems present themselves. If I try to go to microsoft.com or access windows update from the icon on my start menu, I get the following message:

This page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.

Well it has been unavailable to me for many months, and I have tried often. If I try to acces windows update from this link:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/thanks.asp

I get the update page, but the scan never takes place, and eventually an error 0x80072ee2 appears. There are some hints for solving the error, but none of them work.

I am about to try reinstalling window, but that is always a can of worms and I hate to have to resort to it.

Zephyr--Just for the record, the Corporate Update site mentioned in the Infinisource article is out of business. However, there now is a Windows Update Catalog site that accomplishes more or less the same thing--being able to download MS update files and patches for manual installation.
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/
And there are Download sites for the various Windows OS's (98 and up), but I don't find them to be very helpful, since the offerings seem to be ancient and incomplete.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx
The MS Download search site is not bad, but you have to know what you are looking for.

Thanks Jim, the whidbey site worked and I was able to download the new VM. None of the other links worked and you are right, the Infinisource article is out of date. Most of the knowledge base articles sited are no longer avaialble either. Even though I now have the update, I hate to abandon my quest to solve my inabilty to get to any of the Microsoft sites. The only one available to me is the Office update site and for a while, I was able to back in to the windows site from there, but not any more. Can't do anymore security updates. I guess it is time to abandon 98se and see if I can find a legitimate copy of 2000 pro. I have a lot of legacy software and hardware and hate to go to XP.

charlibob--Are you getting any messages about ActiveX when you try to access MS sites?
Maybe this has been said in one of the other posts, but you need ActiveX enabled to access the Windows Update scan. The simplest way to do this is to put http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
    (or probably just http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
in your Trusted Sites. But, of course, you could also change the ActiveX settings globally for all Internet Sites.
