    HELP!

Old Reliable Netscape 4.79 became ill on startup today... :(

    NS Began to load and opened Communicator;
then popped up the ISP DialUp window...

and Immediately displayed the  dreaded error box:

    "Netscape... Invalid Page Fault...

    module NETSCAPE.EXE at 0167:0057fa5b "

Have Checked C: drive = no new errors or faulty areas

Did a DeFrag of C: = reasonably quick / no hangups...

NS 7.02 does start + open DialUp + and work without any errors

Soooo.. Any Tips on how to Rebuild or Repair NS 4.79 ??

    Note: NS 4.79 and 7.02 are loaded on the Same Drive;
but have happily co-existed for months...

    I uaually use 4.79 - handles E-mail MUCH better!

THANKS for any & all Suggestions!!

    Hi Phred,

This is usually the most successful solution when experiencing the netscape.exe error.

    Rebuild the Netscape REGISTRY:

Back up all USERS directories (folders).
    Close Netscape
Rename NSREG.DAT to NSREG.BAK in C:\WINDOWS, then restart Netscape. Netscape will prompt for a new Profile. Give it the exact same name of your existing Profile, and it should recognize it. Multiple Profiles can be restored the same way.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Did it; STILL Same error...

    Hi, Ramona ~

    Did as suggested...
    "Rebuild the Netscape REGISTRY:

Back up all USERS directories (folders).
    Close Netscape
    Rename NSREG.DAT to NSREG.BAK in C:\WINDOWS,
    then restart Netscape.
Netscape will prompt for a new Profile.
Give it the exact same name of your existing Profile,
and it should recognize it. "

As soon as it started up, Netscape 4.79 Did Prompt for a profile, And accepted and "found" the old one...

But when 4.79 began to load... it got through the Communicator portion, popped up the DialUp window,
then displayed the Same Error box =
    "Netscape... Invalid Page Fault...

    module NETSCAPE.EXE at 0167:0057fa5b "

    Woe is me. :(

I'd *REALLY* like to get ole Reliable 4.79 back up & running!

Standing by for your next suggestion... ;)

    UpDate on 12/23/2003...

    Hi Ramona ~
    >> SKIP to the "bottom" of this post... :D

Same Situation as outlined above still happening.
    My "workaround" is as follows:
    1) Open NS 7.02 =
    a) 7.02 E-mail program opens
    b) 7.02 Browser pgm opens
    c) Dialup opens & connects to ISP
    2) Then I *close* the NS 7.02 Browser window
    3) Select NS 4.79 shortcut
    4) NS 4.79 BROWSER opens & Runs like a Champ!
    5) I "deal with" NS 7.02 E-mail program - but HATE it... :(
I'd LOVE to put the *fix* on the E-mail side of 4.79.
Note: IF I try to just start 4.79 - the Page Fault Error happens every time.

Rebuilding the Registry went as you suggested - just didn't *fix* the problem...
    ==============================================
    MidNite UppyDate >>

    WOULD YOU BELIEVE??

    SomeHow "fixed" it...
    Possibly had corrupted ShortCuts...
Opened 4.79 with the Netscape 4.79 ".exe" file
AND IT LOADED - both Browser AND E-mail!!

    NOW the *dumm* question is...

Any "easy way" to move a whole BUNCH of stored e-mails Back to 4.79's email folders
    FROM the 7.02 email folders???

Hope this still works tomorrow.

    Later.... /s/ Phred
    THANKS! /s/ Phred

    Hi Phred,

Glad you were able to find the source of the Netscape.exe error! Congratulations on your perseverance.

To move the Mail files back to your 4.79 Mail folder:

Close both Versions of Netscape, including Netscape 7.02 Quick Launch
    Backup both Version's Profile/Users Folder

In the 7.02 Mail folder, copy all files without an MSF extension.

Paste the files without the MSF extension into the 4.79 Mail folder.

CAUTION: To avoid overwriting any existing Mail in the 4.79 folder
    Rename the 7.02 files:
    Inbox to OldInbox
    Drafts to OldDrafts
    Sent to OldSent, etc.

When you open 4.79 you will see the folders you just pasted, and renamed.

You can then drag the mail in the renamed folders to the appropriate default folder.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Ramona :D
