This is going to be vague but every 2 to 3 days I get a shutdown that takes me to a DOS screen that doesn't stay on the screen long enough to read completely. Holding "Pause" doesn't stop it and the reboot process then proceeds to scan disk which supposedly fixes the problem.
What little I can read (I think) before it reboots is:

    Symvent.sys or Symvent.exe cause a page fault.

Symvent appears to be something used by Norton Anti-Virus 2002 Professional, the only Norton app on my PC. It's been installed for a number of months but the problem is recent.

Using Win XP and after reboot, asks if i want to send an error report to Microsoft. I click yes, send the report and that's the end of it.

PC runs OK for a few days then same problem.

    Any suggestions?

Disable Error Reporting and see whether you are then presented with a more comprehensive error message.

    from the Symantec site

Title: 'How to remove SymEvent manually from Windows NT/2000/XP'

Once you manually uninstall SymEvent, I suggest you refer to the
article provided below to update the SymEvent files:

Downloaded current Sevinst.exe file from Norton. Reinstalled it and haven't had the problem for past week.
