I've previously changed CD-R/RW drives 3 times. Now, I'm changing drives again.

Each drive came with it's own program for UDF formatting of CDRW discs. Each time I changed drives I changed the software. From HP's to B's Clip to IN-CD by Nero.

From B's Clip: "You may have only one UDF packet writing progam installed. "

Each software edition appears to be specific to the installed drive.

For example, Nero's CD bundled with Artec 48X drive (the last drive installed) is clearly marked "The software will only work with the CD-recorder it came bundled with."

With IN-CD installed the Artec drive would read CDs formatted with B's clip, but the program refuses to write to or format them. So, I have about 25 un-reusable CD-RW discs.

Now, to add to my confusion, I pulled the Artec drive and installed Pioneer's DVD-R/RW CDR/RW drive. And guess what? As Gomer Pyle used to say, Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! It comes bundled with a different program, the fourth one to go on this machine, Pinnacle's UDF packet writing software. I mean, this is getting rediculous.

Since I have no choice if I want to use the Pioneer drive for CDRW packet writing??? I have to install the Pinnacle program, is there any way to overcome one program's inability to format CDRWs formatted with a different program and drive? Is there a universal program that will work with any drive??

Nero. Full version, not the bundled one. Worth the money.
It will work with just about every burner ever made. It will rewrite/format any CDRW. You get what you pay for.

Hi again: I had the full version of Nero, including UDF on the drive I now can't read, and, I have the download, but not the serial number. I emailed Nero, their site says they will email me with it, no end of problems from dead drive. Emailed them yesterday, still waiting for response with fingers crossed.

Cold comfort I know, but packet writing is a pain in the proverbial under XP. It is a very antiquated file system which does not sit comfortably with modern file systems.

Have 3 CD-RW drives, 1 each in my 2 desktops and laptop - Asus - Yamaha and Toshiba.

The Yamaha came with Adaptec software, now Roxio which was pretty unreliable. Acquired a copy of Nero - no problems under 98 SE - horrendous problems with InCd under XP

The Asus came with Nero - "The software will only work with the CD-recorder it came bundled with." Not a problem with a full, licensed copy of Nero to hand, but again problems with InCd and XP.

As the updates to InCd poured out of Ahead the performance got better to the point where it is now just about acceptable.

The laptop came with some HP software which I immediately dumped in favour of Nero/InCd and consistency between pc's.

I agree with Reboot - Nero, full version is the BEST, but InCd is not a 100 % right yet.

Incidentally try erasing your CD-Rw's in Nero before reformatting in In Cd - I remember reading that somewhere.

I cant figure this out, I replied to PeteC earlier today, but I don't know what happened to the post. It is not here.

Anyhow, PeteC, thanks for the info. I did try erasing CD with Nero and then formatting. No go. Like I said, I had upgraded to full version of Nero, S# went missing along with crashed Drive.

I requested replacement Monday by email per their instructions, no response to date. Sure is slower when you are not sending any money.

Been there -- New system 6 months old and the burner goes south. Local builder replaced with a faster unit, but Nero says no go with the new burner. So I switch over to "Exact Audio Copy" -- (EAC). Cardware, can be downloaded here. I'm not a major burner, but have not made a coaster yet, more than I can say for Nero. Still getting aquainted, but is a definite keeper. Fortunatley, InCD still works on the new burner. Not a solution for merry go round UDF versions, but nice replacement for Nero.

Hey Dennis: sorry to take so long to get back to you on this, but been busy with trying to repair a crash.

Anyhow, thanks for the link, I don't burn any music CDs, mostly data and video. Somehow I got InCD working with new drive, maybe because I paid the update of $19. earlier on when InCD first installed.

I got a 13 year old son who has been asking me for CD copying, file sharing, I keep telling him it's illegal. He has his own machine with CD burner, just hasn't figured out how to use it yet.
