I have a Windows 2000 machine. Everytime I boot up and windows starts I get an error message which says

"This program is used internally by PackageFromTheWeb. It should not be executed directly "

I don't know what this is refering to. I have check all my start-up files, the registry, and even install "startup cop ". And nothing is running at start up that might give me this message. I am running Norton AV and Zone alarm as start files but that's about, plus i had the problem before installing them.

    any ideas anyone?

so based on those other references to the error, it would seem some program has been incompletely installed and is looking for some kind of set files? if this is a logical assumption, than it would seem that cleaning out an incomplete program installation might work. is there any reason not to delete all the files in the following directories

    c:\winnt\temp
    c:\winnt\windows update setup files
    c:\winnt\downloaded program files

and is there anywhere else i should check??

Might be easier to try installing the app again. It should then either work fine or, if you don't want it, should uninstall cleanly.

Otherwise I'd worry that the partial install had written files and registry entries already and I'd be stuck with them forever.

    Was yours DeskArtes Expert Series?

The problem is I don't know whats been installed and when. I let my cousin use this machine and of course he calls me for problem solving. Which means I don't know what to re-install or uninstall.

I'm thinking I will try using some kind of registry cleaner like regvac or something. I've used them on 9x machines and they seem to do wonders with fixing problems.

Has anyone used a registry cleaner sucessfully on windows 2000??

PackageFromTheWeb is used by some installers besides DeskArtes Expert Series!

Newt's suggestion to complete the install so it can be then uninstalled is the best option to fix this!

This is your computer so if cousin installed junk then remove the junk! I would go to add/remove and remove all that is not yours or you don't know about!

Then I would run system tools-disk cleanup this will get most of what you asked about!

Registry cleaners yes the following are the best and I run them on all w2k and xp!

EasyClean does more than the registry do all excet the duplicate files unless you know what you are doing!

RegCleaner gives you a page to see what is installed. Look for the entry for this program and remove it and any others you have uninstalled in the past, these are leftovers from the uninstall!
Then go to tools-registry-do them all!

RegscrubXp runs only in xp and 2k! Chose "let regscub find "!

I run these 1 at a time and cycle thu again untill no bad entries are found (when one finds something and removes it, it may then allow the others to find even more) usually 3 times thru will do it! then Reboot!
