    Please help

I have a DELL Inspiron 5100 laptop, of which will only last for about 3 minutes on my lap, 7 minutes on a table, and 30 minutes half on a window sill the other half hanging out the window.
The problem started about 6 months ago (when it was cold) but has got worse (maybe due to heat wave)
The laptop is only 12 months old.
    What are the possible causes?

    Any help well appreicated !

Any evidence of the cooling fan cutting in? If not looks like it has failed and the laptop is shutting down on over temperature.

Download Everest and check out the CPU temperature - Computer > Sensor in left hand pane. Should also show cooling fan speed.

If it's still under warranty I would get it back to Dell pronto :D

everest FAQ #022: Is it possible to detect temperatures, voltage values and fan status of Dell computers? A#022: Dell computers use a proprietary sensor chip that is undocumented and so cannot be supported by EVEREST.

:( is there any software that will. I am chasing a lock up for a dell laptop in our sales dept.

Thanks for that piece of info - Dell again :)

Try Motherboard Monitor - I've not used it, but others on the bbs have and do - no idea if it works for Dell.

Suggest you have a look around the Dell forums. I found a fan and CPU monitor mentioned here: Dell Latitude Forum. They suggest BIOS upgrades for temperature problems.

Hope you find something of use.
