    Good Day:
I'm using the office XP suite on WinXP- SP1 and also on WIN98SE. THis problem manifests itself on both systems.

I go through and set up my IPS's SMTP settings, and outlook works just fine.
After it does a send/receive it changes the following setting in the Profile.

    1. It changes the "Incoming Mail Server (POP3)" to localhost.

    2. It changes the user name to username/SMTP server setting. ( it is the text that was in the Incoming Mail Server box)

When this happens outlook cannot connect to the mail server, so i get an error. I then have to go into
Tools -> options -> Mail Setup -> E-<mail accounts, and select the account and then change the settings back.

I have deleted the profile, created it from scratch to no avail.
I have the Instant messinger setup so that it does not auto start with outlook.

Are you running Norton anti-virus? email scanning feature can created the symptoms you describe.

If so, take a look at this page to get it configured correctly for email. Scroll down to the "Email Protection" sub-heading.
