I'm not satisfied with my helpdesk answer so I'm posting my problem to see if anyone can find me a fix:

This is MS Outlook 2000 on NT

A public Outlook folder was created for my team. I am in the process of setting it up with all the info, messages, rules, meetings.

When I post a meeting in the calendar, it automatically tells me that there is a new posted message. i.e. Folder listing is on the right of the screen, calendar on the left. I put in a new meeting on the left, save it, and on the right it lists the Calendar (1)

I've added several meetings to the calendar, and when I finally give my team access they are going to see Calendar (78)

This is going to confuse them. I know they can just right-click on Calendar and select "Mark all as read" but I want to mark them as read as soon as they are posted to the calendar.

My helpdesk says that the only way to do this is to create a rule, however it wouldn't do any good because rules aren't allowed to be created on the server.

My personal calendar doesn't do this, (and I've never created any special rules for it) so I'm thinking there has to be a way to shut this "unread" thing off.

    Thanks!

If I'm understanding you correctly, here's the deal...

Whenever you post something to a public folder, it is marked as Read or Un-Read by user. In other words, if I read a post on my PC that post is marked read for me. If you go to that same public folder, that message will be un-read for you because you have not read it yet. When you read it, it will be marked un-read for you.

Public folders work just like internet newsgroups do. The messages are posted to the server and the client software used to read those messages can mark things as read, un-read, change the view, etc... and that will only affect that person.

A few years back I setup a public folder to post things like system outages, database updates, scheduled maintenance, etc... and I could have read every message (therefore marking everything as Read) but the guy next to me may not have read any of the posts and it would show up everything as un-read.

Yes, this is what is happening. I don't care that the new posts show up in our messaging areas. I do care that it shows up in the calendar. The calendar is only informational, and will not be used to schedule meetings. Therefore, no one really needs to know (with the exception of me, the owner) of new posts to it.

If I can't get them marked as unread, can you tell me how I can go to the new posted material automatically? I can't seem to find any features with the calendar.

Hm, I don't believe Outlook has that functionality.
