Is there any way of preventing emails from activating dial-up? It is intensely annoying when a raft of emails appear in my Outlook Inbox and although not "opened" some will attempt to activate the dialler when given the focus.

Tim - sorry for the long delay but I haven't been up in this section for a while.

Sorry I can't give you specifics but I'm using outlook on a LAN connection thru exchange server so the options I have are different but there certainly should be a place under tools where you can set to send immediately or delay.

Maybe with the thread back on top someone else can help out.

I'd guess the dial-up attempt is being initiated by HTML content. I think there's a setting in OE (under Tools - Options) which allows you to disable OE's ability to initiate connections and checking the appropriate option should remedy the issue (sorry - but I'm using a Outlook at the moment so cannot be more specific as to where the setting is to be found!).

Doh! And now I don't have access to Outlook!

I was wrong about that setting in OE anyway - it was IE's "Never dial ... " setting of which I was thinking.

However, the Chilton Preview Pane should prevent HTML mails initiating connection attempts.

If you're running XP, click the Start button and go Control Panel \ Network Connections and from there click the Advanced menu and choose Dialup preferences. In the Dialup Preferences window you need to uncheck the checkbox next to "Enable autodial by Location ".

(Unashamedly ripped off from the Lockergnome newsletter.)
