I have a machine running ME that has Outlook Express 6 on it (well, that's probably my problem right there ...) In the past few weeks, the Outlook Express icon has superimposed itself over 7 other program icons on my desktop, randomly. The original icons still exist, and they still open their correct programs, but the Outlook icon sits on top of them for no reason whatsoever.

I have tried deleting the shortcuts and making new ones. When you browse to their .exe files to associate the icon, the icon looks normal, but as soon as you select it and click OK, the desktop icon gets Outlook superimposed over it.

The programs are of various natures - Windows Media Player, Python (programming language), Kazaa, Sims, Dungeon Siege, Bejeweled and PrintMaster. There's no obvious correlation between any of the programs, some of which have not been used in months. Programs that I have installed recently do not get this superimposition, and , as I have stated, even removing the shortcuts and recreating them has no effect (Note: the .exe to which they point look normal - no Outlook - and their .ico file also looks normal. It's only after you choose the icon and put it on the desktop or in any other folder that Outlook hops on board ....)

As a further twist, the Internet Explorer icon has superimposed itself over the My Documents folder, too. Any ideas?

The simplest...and therefore the first...thing to try is search the harddrive for "shelliconcache" (without the quotes), delete it and then reboot. Windows will build a new one and, hopefully, that will get the icons back to the way they should be.

The same thing can be accomplised using TweakUI's "Rebuild Icon" feature.

If fixing the cache doesn't work, the final, more dangerous method is to increase the size of the icon cache itself, which requires a registry edit.

Instructions for the registry edit can be found on this page.

Thanks. The Shellicon didn't work, but TweakUI did. Much nicer to look at now...
