Our old computer had Outlook Express 2003, I believe. Our new computer has Outlook 2010. Is there a way to transfer the old emails and address books so they can be used in the new computer? The graphics on the old computer crapped out, so I have removed the old hard drive and using this rocketfish docking thing have connected it to the new computer through a USB port.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

Guessing you mean OUTLOOK 2003 that comes with Microsoft Office 2003.

Outlook Express is the email client that comes with Windows and doesn't use verison numbers like 2003.

Actually, I do mean Outlook Express. I only said 2003 because that was when I got the computer.

I followed the instructions from the above link but nothing seemed to transfer. I never saw anything in the instructions that addressed where to look for the old emails and adressess. I had my old hard drive connected when I did this. How would this wizard know where to look for the old emails and addresses?

The instructions assume that OE is installed on your main drive.

Your email messages are located on the old dive here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{E5C4B58E-0072-4A0E-BA21-DD32793F2322}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

I'm having trouble following the path listed above. I get as far as Documents and Settings\my user name\ but then Local Settings isn't listed. I can click on Application Data\Identities\then a string of numbers and letters, but when I click on that my choices are xmlparse.dll or zgt.lib instead of \Microsoft\Outlook Express.

To be able to "see" Local Settings you'll have to set Explorer to Show hidden files and folders

Ok, I'm able to find the identities folders now that I've checked show hidden files and folders. These folders are still on my old drive. SteveRJones said that the instructions are assuming Outlook Express is on my main drive. Since it's not, what do I do next?

Well, I may have figured out a way to do what I am hoping to accomplish. I'd like to bounce my plan off the forum's collective wisdom to see if it sounds doable.

Just to see if I could do it, I tried to import the old emails from one of the Outlook Express identities into Windows Live Mail instead of into Outlook. It worked! That got me thinking that perhaps we could just use Live Mail as our email program instead of Outlook. So here's my plan.

I'm thinking that I can't have both Live Mail and Outlook set up to be our email program at the same time. (Correct me if I'm wrong) Before I set up Live Mail, then, I would have to do something with the two weeks worth of emails we have on Outlook. I thought I would create a gmail account and send those emails to it to give them someplace to hang out until I'm ready for them.

Next I would set up Live Mail to be our email program, including, I hope, separate identities to match up with the separate identities we had on Outlook Express. Then I copy the old OE emails from the old hard drive to a folder on the new computer. Next I import these emails into Live Mail. Hopefully I'll be able to keep the identities separate from each other. The emails will all appear as unread, but we can deal with that. Finally, I go to the gmail account and email the messages from there to the correct Live Mail identities.

This seems like it will be a lot of work, but I'm running out of hope that I could ever get the OE messages into Outlook. I'm wondering if this might be because OE was a free program and Outlook isn't?

Please share any thoughts on this. Thanks again.

I use WLM and the wife uses Outlook. She is used to Outlook as that is what they have at work. You can set BOTH of them up if you want and have one of them leave a message on the server and the other one will not leave it on there. Your choice.

I was able to successfully transfer all of the old Outlook Express messages into Windows Live Mail. My quest is almost finished!

Now I need to learn how to transfer the contents of our five Outlook Express address books to the corresponding five Windows Live Mail address books or Contacts or whatever it is now called.

Any help to finish this off will be much appreciated.

Go to File and Export in O or OE, then File and Import in WLM. Do them as CSV.

Unfortunately, I can't actually open the Outlook Express program to export the adress book. If I knew the path to get to the address book file(s) I am hoping to get the data that way, just like I got the emails.

Addresses successfully imported! Looks like I'm good to go with Windows Live Mail. Thanks for all of the help.
