Quite often, when I try to send a message, Outlook Express gives me the message "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience ".

If I close Outlook Express and re-open it, then the message is sent and I can continue to send and receive messages without any problem, until the error occurs again.

I am happy to continue working like this, though it is just a bit convenient, but I am concerned that some day, I might get the message when I try to open Outlook Express and that I might be locked out from using it.

Do you recommend that I should try to discover what is causing the error message, or just continue as at present, closing Outlook Express each time I get the error and re-opening it?

    Peter987,
it seems like your "Sent Items" folder is corrupted.

In Outlook Express, create a new folder "Sent Backup ". Move your all messages in the "Sent Items" folder to the "Sent Backup" folder. Close Outlook Express.

    Open Windows Explorer.

Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > find and click the radio button to "show hidden files and folders" > OK.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data \Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express (where {GUID} is a unique alphanumeric number) and delete the file "Sent Items.dbx ".

    Close Windows Explorer.

When you reopen Outlook Express, the file "Sent Items.dbx" will be recreated. See how it works for a day or two.

In general terms, keep the size of the Inbox and the Sent Items at a reasonable level. When they approach 1 GB, things can start happening and it is recommended to delete obsolete messages and move others to user created folders.

With that consideration in mind, decide if you want to move the messages back from Sent Backup.

    Hi Mr Bill and Christer:

    Thanks for your replies.

    1. Mr Bill:

I have not installed KB900930 manually on my PC, but it may have been installed automatically as part of one of the windows updates.

I found reference to this when I was searching through the internet, but it seemed to be a 2005 fix, and as my problems only began in 2007, I assumed that it would not be relevant.

However, the problem is now solved. I made a different post in the same section of the forum, on the same day as I opened this post. It turns out that both the problems I had were related and were caused by a corrupt 'send', file as Christer suggests. All is now working well.

    2. Christer:

Thanks for your comment. In fact you were one of the two people who responded to mu 'other query' on the forum, and helped me solve my problem.
I'll add a final comment to the 'other forum' to let people know that all is well now.

    - Peter
