The replies I have gotten so far are appreciated. Very helpfull, but I'm hoping for more information. Apparently I don't know beans!

I had previously thought that the "Sent Items" folder in Outlook Express was a good way to establish that a message was actually sent (i.e. had gone to my isp's server).

I understand that e-mail I send might not be received by the intended recipient for a variety of reasons that are beyond my controll. What I want is to establish that I actually sent an e-mail to somebody. If they receive it, great, but that's not my problem.

I am trying to deal with someone who maintains that that the records in my "Sent Items" folder are not good enough to prove that I actually sent them an e-mail because they claim the records can be falsified, i.e. they are not proof that I actually sent anything.

For clarification: The intended recipient of an e-mail I have sent using Outlook Express in Win2k wants to deny receiving the message by claiming that I never sent it.

I want to use the record of the e-mail that is in my "Sent Items" folder to establish that I did send the message, but this person says I could have tampered with the "Sent Items" folder to make it look like I sent the message even if I didn't actually send it.

Is the "Sent Items" folder in Outlook Express secure against this kind of tampering? If not, how else could I show that I sent these messages? That I watched them go? I need credibility!

    Please help,

    Smeared

    Hello egutsche,

Where is the sent folder located? On MSN its located on the HD. If it is on the HD, you're going to have to find it and copy it or failing finding it specifically, copy the OE folder.

    Regards - Charles

egutsche --You may have sent it, and have proof that you did, but that does not mean the receiver opened it. And in addition to his having just deleted it,
1)He may have messages from you blocked.
2)His ISP may block messages from your ISP.
3)Firewalls and proxies may be in the way, etc.
P.S. In OE there is a setting in OE Tools|Options|Receipts tab. You can see that you can request confirmation that the message has been read, but he can use the settings at the bottom at his end to refuse to send the confirmation.
May be best to send certified snail mail if this is important.

You might want to look into HaveTheyReadItYet, a freeware program which will let you know whether a message has been opened. The recipient can't control whether that information is sent like they can with most email programs' read receipt feature.

The only way the recipient can avoid having the message logged as read is not open it at all.
