I am running XP Pro and outlook 6 when I switch identities Outlook simply disapears. I have a new motherboard and a fresh install of XP Pro so it has always done this. It runs fine if you don't switch idintities. Once it disapears you cant restart it. when you try to it simply lets the hourglass come up breifly and nothing happens. Can anyone help? Thanks. J. Since you can't restart OE after it disappears, it probably didn't really shut down completely, it's actually hanging up trying to switch identities. If you look in Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del) you'll most likely see Outlook Express listed...probably as "not responding." If you end task, you'll be able to start it up again.

The MS Knowledge Base has a number of articles about this problem but they're all related to OE 5, not 6. The fixes may be the same, though.

One possibility is McAfee...if you have it installed and are using its email scanning. If so, disable that and see if you continue to experience the problem. The fix, according to MS, lies with McAfee.

Other possibilities are described in Article Q274017 and Q271741 .
