I am trying to help my mother find her old e-mails in Outlook Express 6. She had a hard-drive failure and is now up and running with a new hard-drive but cannot find any of her old e-mails. Is it possible to access these through the OE software?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Was any of the data copied off the failed hard drive? If the disk is recognised when connected to another computer as slave this is possible and the data restored.

A new hard drive invloves a fresh install of everything (unless you had an image of the old drive stored independently to load to the new drive) and clearly any data that was on the old drive is lost, including emails.

If your mother had OE set to leave copies of emails on the server - unlikely - you may be able to retrieve them through web mail on her ISP. To check if this is the case .....

Tools > Accounts - highlight the Account > Properties > Advanced tab - Delivery. AFAIK the box is unchecked by default.

Thank you for your response but sadly nothing was saved from the old hard drive so it appears that this information has disappeared for good. Thank you anyway.

If you have the old hard drive you could try connecting it to another computer as a slave - if the drive is recognised you may be able to copy off some of the data - depends on the nature of the drive failure. Simple with a desktop, less so with a laptop.

Hindsight is great, and now would be a good time to introduce your mother to backing up personal data :)

Believe it or not but she does back up all her files and photos but wouldn't know how to back up all her e-mails - at least they are all personal and not business which would have been disastrous!!
