Hi all (and best wishes for the coming holiday season :)).
I was asked to back up a single (OE) mail folder for a friend. This was no prob, I went to his mail store and burnt the 330mb .dbx file to a CD.
But he asked me how he could easily access the folder, in the event that he ever needs to re-examine some of its contained docs, pics etc.
I couldn't think of an easy method. What's the best way to do this?

In Outlook Express click Import on the File menu, then click Messages.

    2. Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and click Next.

    3. Select Import mail from an OE6 store directory and click OK.

    4. Browse to the folder with your backup DBX files and click Next

sp3851, thanks. Actually, I tried that method first off but it didn't seem to work. Maybe there's a problem with OE on the XPP machine I used to test the file, as I've used it for some earlier experimentation.
Maybe I should create a new identity in that OE and try it again.
    Cheers :)

Look at DBXtract - not quite what you were after, but would perhaps do the job - in a roundabout way .

I would right click on the folder and select SEND TO "Desktop" (create shortcut)

Thanks guys but not quite what I was after. I was trying to find a quick and easy method that my non-computer-savvy friend could use to re-open the backed-up mail folder that I'd prepared for him.
Anyway, I delved into my archives and dug out the method I'd used some years back. It works, but it's laborious. I'll detail it here in case someone else can use it, but I'd still like to find a quicker, more convenient way.
    1) Go into the message store and find the dbx file that represents the actual folder that's to be backed-up. For example, if the Outlook Express folder is named 'Important', there'll be a file in the store named Important.dbx. Copy this file to a disk or whatever.
    2) Create a new identity in any Outlook Express.
    3) Open the new identity and it will have the usual default folders; Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Deleted Items and Drafts. They'll all be empty. Create a new folder named Important.
    4) Close Outlook Express then reopen it.
    5) Note the location of the message store using Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder.
    6) Close Outlook Express and go to the store folder.
    7) Overwrite Important.dbx in the store folder with the saved version. OK the overwrite.
    8) Open Outlook Express and the Important folder should contain the saved files. All of the other folders will still be empty.

OK, I've just tried it and the method works. But it's laborious and not easy for tyros. I would have thought that by now there'd be a more sophisticated method, but apparently not :)

As OE is dead in the water that is unlikely :)
