When I go to open a attachment from a freind who is running XP with MSM it tries to open with realplayer. Realplayer can't open it. I think that the window that ask you what you want to use dosen't come up. I think that I checked use this all the time,& it's the wrong program for what is being sent
    Running 98se

What is the file type (the last three letters after the dot)? If you cannot see those letters, save the file, right click on it and see what it says on the General tab, "Type" line.

Den--You will have determine just what the file type of this attachment this is. It apparently is not a file type that Real Player can open. But we cannot help unless you find out what file type it is. Did you follow the suggestion for determining this which I posted earlier?
Alternatively, click Start|Settings|Folder Options|View tab|Uncheck the box next to "Hide file extensions for all known file types ", click Apply|OK.
Now can you see the file type (three letter extension)?
If you are saying the attachment, itself, is an email, then it should open in Outlook Express when you click on it. Since it does not, this suggests it is not an email, either. However, if you feel it is an email you can hold down Shift, right click on the attachment, click on "Open With... ", scroll to MSIMN, highlight that, click OK. If that works, then the attachment is email. Post back and I can tell you how to make the association permanent. But if it did not work, then as I have said, we have to know what the file type of extension is. We cannot tell you how to open an attachment unless we know the file type.

Den--the file extension .ema is not one I am familiar with. It could be an abbreviation for .email, which could be a variation on the normal Outlook Express file type which is .eml.
You could change the file extension to .eml (right click on it, Rename) and then try to open it with the instructions I gave earlier.
"However, if you feel it is an email you can hold down Shift, right click on the attachment, click on "Open With... ", scroll to MSIMN, highlight that, click OK. If that works, then the attachment is email. Post back and I can tell you how to make the association permanent. "
If that works, you make the association permanent by checking the box at the bottom of the "Open With..." window, "Always use this program... ".
Only one thing bothers me and that is the possibility that this attachment has a virus. You should scan with your antivirus program before attempting to open.
Post back to tell us how you are progressing.

You can't shift/right click an attachment in OE6. At least, I couldn't! The option 'open with' does not pop up. All I get is OPEN, PRINT, SAVE AS, SAVE ALL and ADD or REMOVE which is usually greyed out. I had an attachment which was an mp3 that insisted on opening up with RealOne Player and I refused to let it. I saved the file and then did the shift/right click and opened it with my Media Player. If this isn't how it's supposed to work, tell me the fix for it! I seem to remember my other OE versions only having the same options.

Good luck, DEN, on your question.

    :)

Panda--thanks for pointing this out. I told Den to save the file early in this thread. He should hold the Shift key and right click on the saved file to find "Open With... ".

I have told you how to do this twice. Please read the earlier messages. But also that you must first save the file, per Panda's message. Then hold down Shift and right click on the saved file.

I did that the file is bad.IT still would't open with anythig that I tried. You should be able to change what a file opens with OE6. When I first reinstalled IE6 there was a window that came up asking what program I wanted to use. Ithink that the box was checked to use this program all the time. Iwould like to change this.
